ATLANTA — Five days after Braves pitcher Spencer Strider returned to the mound following a year-long recovery from elbow surgery, he returned to the injured list Monday, this time for a hamstring injury.
Strider strained his right hamstring while playing catch Monday afternoon, the Braves said. They didn’t elaborate on how it happened, but Strider notified a team official soon after the incident that he wouldn’t be able to make his scheduled start Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was placed on the 15-day IL, backdated to April 18, and was sent to get an MRI late Monday afternoon.
The Braves said they were still discussing who would replace Strider in Tuesday’s game, and said that could depend in part on how Monday night’s series opener went. They called up right-hander Michael Peterson from Triple-A Gwinnett to take Strider’s roster spot, and Peterson could be an option to start Tuesday.
Strider, the major league leader in wins and strikeouts in 2023, made only two starts in 2024 before having internal-brace surgery to repair a damaged UCL in his pitching elbow. He also had Tommy John surgery on the elbow in 2019 while still in college at Clemson.
He made his much-anticipated return to the major league mound Wednesday at Toronto, pitching five innings and allowing five hits, two runs and one walk with five strikeouts in a 3-1 loss.
The Braves already lost one of their top three starters, Reynaldo López, to a shoulder injury that is expected to keep him out until at least September if not the entire season. López had arthroscopic surgery April 8 after making just one start.
