A morte do papa Francisco, aos 88 anos, nesta segunda-feira, comoveu as principais figuras do futebol. O presidente da Fifa, Gianni Infantino, lamentou, nas redes sociais, o falecimento do primeiro pontífice latino-americano e destacou a paixão e o entusiasmo dele pelo esporte.
O dirigente também fez questão de relembrar encontros com o papa, que chamava o futebol de “esporte mais bonito do mundo”, além de “reiterar sua esperança de que ele pudesse ser uma força unificadora global e um impulso positivo para o bem”.
Torcedor do San Lorenzo, Francisco nasceu em 17 de dezembro de 1936, em Buenos Aires, Argentina, e assumiu o maior cargo da Igreja Católica em 2013, um ano antes de seu time do coração vencer a Libertadores pela primeira vez.

Tive o privilégio de passar algum tempo com ele em algumas ocasiões, e ele sempre demonstrou seu entusiasmo pelo futebol e destacou o papel importante que o nosso esporte desempenha na sociedade, especialmente no que diz respeito à educação e à proteção das crianças ao redor do mundo.
“O futebol é o esporte mais bonito do mundo…” essas foram suas palavras.
No início deste ano, na Cúpula de Líderes Mundiais sobre os Direitos das Crianças no Vaticano, ele reiterou sua esperança de que o futebol seja uma força unificadora globalmente e uma força positiva para o bem.
Sei o quanto ele significava para a comunidade católica como líder da sua igreja em todo o mundo. Por meio da mensagem de esperança e paz que transmitiu tão recentemente quanto ontem, no Domingo de Páscoa, ele liderou pelo exemplo, e envio minhas mais sinceras condolências a todos que o conheceram — sua comunidade, família e amigos. Todas as orações do mundo do futebol estão com ele. Que ele descanse em paz.
