Amid growing tension and dissatisfaction, a discussion on the Dallas Cowboys‘ subreddit proposed a bold what-if scenario: What if Troy Aikman returned to the organization as general manager? The idea, while far-fetched, tapped into a shared longing for a new direction-one where the Cowboys‘ football decisions aren’t dictated by Jerry Jones‘ unchecked ego.
Despite Aikman‘s reputation as a sharp football mind and his legacy as a Dallas icon, fans were quick to shut down the fantasy. Many pointed to the billionaire owner’s tight spending habits and massive pride as obstacles too great to overcome.

“Jerry Jones will NEVER hire a GM. Why? Because that would be him admitting he’s failed as one. Why won’t he do that? His stupidly insane ego,” one fan commented.
Others noted that Aikman, now a well-paid broadcaster at ESPN, likely earns more than Jones would ever offer. “Jerry [Jones] can’t afford him,” another user joked, highlighting the financial disconnect between reality and the dream scenario.
This isn’t the first time fans have called for Jones to step down as GM. He’s held the role since buying the team in 1989, famously overseeing both Super Bowl glory in the ’90s and the team’s more recent playoff struggles and long championship drought.

The Cowboys aren’t without options. They hold the 12th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and currently sit with the sixth-most salary cap space in the league. That’s enough flexibility to potentially turn the tide-if Jones and the front office can make smart moves.
But trust is at an all-time low, and the team’s failure to make meaningful changes in recent offseasons is haunting them now more than ever.
Ongoing tensions with Micah Parsons only add to the concern. Losing or alienating one of the league’s most electric defenders could trigger a roster-wide unraveling-something that would further spotlight Jones‘ inability to manage both talent and personalities effectively in today’s NFL landscape.
