Andy Reid and Chiefs’ quiet draft tactics back on the scene with Trent McDuffie confession

During the NFL Draft night in 2022, Trent McDuffie was in a chilled-out hotel suite with family, snacks and zero expectations until a call from Kansas City flipped his future. “I was really chilling like I was on the couch,” McDuffie later shared. “Let’s all just get together and enjoy the draft.”

That was before an unfamiliar number flashed on his phone and Chiefs GM Brett Veach introduced himself. Kansas City traded up to grab McDuffie, but he didn’t even realize who was on the other end of the line at first.

“I didn’t really know who I was talking to,” McDuffie admitted later. That moment of confusion didn’t last long. Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo knew exactly what they were getting-a defensive Swiss Army knife who would become a foundational piece of the NFL’s most complete defense.

Three years and two Super Bowl rings later, McDuffie is doing more than just locking down elite receivers. He’s blitzing off the edge, forcing turnovers, and leading all cornerbacks in pressures during the 2023 season.

His versatility has made him indispensable-and his rookie contract might be the biggest bargain on Kansas City’s books.

McDuffie’s future

The fifth-year option looms in 2026, and the cornerback market just shifted dramatically. The Houston Texans handed Derek Stingley Jr. a staggering $90 million extension, setting a new ceiling for elite young corners.

“The longer the Chiefs wait to extend McDuffie, the greater his payday will be,” analyst Scott Rogust said.

For a franchise known for letting talented corners walk-just ask L’Jarius Sneed – this could mark a turning point. Keeping McDuffie would mean breaking tradition and breaking open the bank. Yet the argument for doing so is stronger than ever.

“He’s wired the right way,” Veach said of McDuffie after the draft, a sentiment that’s aged like fine wine.

With 182 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 27 pass deflections since 2022, McDuffie is more than stats – he’s the cerebral anchor of a defense that forced six turnovers in a single 2024 playoff game.
