Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud had a courtside seat to an NBA showdown between the hometown Rockets and the Golden State Warriors, but it wasn’t just about basketball. After the game, which saw the Rockets fall 85-95 in game one of the playoff series, Stroud reconnected with Warriors superstar Stephen Curry, a figure he’s admired for years. But this wasn’t their first encounter, and definitely not a random one.

Stroud revealed that he first met Curry long before his NFL career officially began. The two crossed paths in Los Angeles at a restaurant, before the NFL Draft. What started as a quick introduction turned into an hour-long conversation, leaving a lasting impression on the young quarterback. “He was just giving me game,” Stroud said. “For him to even recognize me now, or show love, that was amazing.”
Mutual respect between rising star and veteran icon
What makes this bond unique is the clear mutual admiration between two athletes at different stages in their careers. Stroud, one of the NFL’s most exciting young quarterbacks, sees Curry as more than just a basketball legend, he’s a blueprint for longevity, discipline, and greatness.
It’s crazy to see in person just how good he is,” Stroud said. “He takes the talent God gave him and develops it, skill, training, everything. I didn’t even know he was that swole,” he laughed. “He’s at the back end of his career, but playing better than ever.
Curry’s consistency, even at 37, continues to impress not just fans, but fellow athletes across leagues. Stroud noted the importance of seeing someone still grinding, still winning, and still staying grounded enough to encourage others.
More moments to come?
With game two on the horizon, Stroud hinted he’s eager to get back to the arena. Whether or not the Rockets turn the tide, one thing’s certain, Stroud will be watching, and maybe catching up with his NBA mentor again.
I’m definitely trying to get back in the building,” he said. “It’s always special being around greatness.
From a chance dinner to post-game handshakes, the relationship between Stroud and Curry is a reminder that greatness recognizes greatness, no matter the sport.
