„Dokud bude válka pokračovat, doufáme, že Rusko se olympiády nezúčastní,“ uvedl 36letý Daugaviņš v pořadu televize TV3. Zkušený útočník, jenž krátce působil i v NHL v týmech Ottawy a Bostonu, dokonce uvažuje o tom, zda by Lotyšsko nemělo olympijský turnaj bojkotovat, pokud se Rusko bude moct účastnit.
„Když k tomu dojde, bude to pro nás velmi těžké rozhodnutí. Myslím, že o účasti Lotyšska na olympijském hokejovém turnaji by se mělo rozhodnout na státní úrovni. Tohle by neměli rozhodovat sportovci, ale ti nahoře,“ dodal Daugaviņš, jenž se podílel na senzačním bronzu Lotyšska z MS 2023.
Na podzim mimochodem překvapivě ukončil kariéru, což si ale po pár měsících zase rozmyslel a nyní už figuruje v přípravném kempu na šampionát v Dánsku a Švédsku.
Jeho slova se dostala i do Ruska, odkud přišla typicky ostrá reakce. „Tohle se nazývá Haškův syndrom,“ reagoval bývalý kouč ruské sborné Vladimir Pljuščev v rozhovoru pro Sovetskij Sport s odkazem na legendárního českého brankáře Dominika Haška, jenž platí od invaze na Ukrajinu za ostrého kritika Ruska a účasti jeho sportovců v mezinárodních soutěžích.
„Chce se (Daugavinš) ukázat tím, že tlachá, a ne tím, jak hraje hokej na ledě. Proč bychom si toho měli všímat a věnovat jeho komentářům pozornost? Teď probíhá protiruská kampaň,“ kritizoval 70letý kouč.
A nepochybuje, že se ruská sborná vrátí brzo v plné síle. „Všichni nám budou líbat zadek a on (Daugavinš) bude u toho. To už jsou takoví lidé. Jejich slova nemají žádnou váhu. Není na něm, aby rozhodoval, zda se Rusko zúčastní olympiády,“ dodal Pljuščev.
