The shifting climate of the Mediterranean Sea has created a bizarre boon for sharks, and tourists and locals of Hadera, northwest Israel, know that all too well.
Endangered dusky and sandbar sharks has been swimming the area for years now, which has created a problem that could be deadly.
A terrifying moment! Woman falls into shark-filled waters amid search for missing swimmer
Officials said Tuesday that they found remains after a father-of-four was mauled to death by a shark in the area. The attack took place near Olga Beach, Hadera, and prompted a major search and rescue operation. The victim threw his arms in the air before being dragged out to sea.
Shark attack leaves woman fighting for her life
Days before the tragedy struck Hadera beach, another tourist got too close to the sharks in a chilling video that was posted online recently. In the images we can see a woman falling onto a shark after the big fish shook the board she was on. Even though it was a dangerous act, she finds amusement on it.
The video sparked comments of social media users that have had similar encounters on other beaches. “Was swimming in the water off Miami Beach a few years ago (waist deep or so) and a shark swam right to me and other (within maybe 4 feet). The water is crystal clear most days, so people were actually trying to pet it. Not me though… wild stuff,” posted an X user.
“She better be glad she didn’t cut her leg on something,” someone added. The problem is, the Israeli scientific organisation EcoOcean, is saying “sharks are not naturally aggressive towards humans” and “there is no reason to be afraid of them”. Yet the waters were known to be infested with sharks, the beaches were not closed and an attack did occur.” noted another X user.
Do sharks attack people?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), only about a dozen of the more than 300 species of sharks have been involved in attacks on humans. The species evolved millions of years before humans existed and therefore we are not part of their normal diets.
“Sharks are opportunistic feeders, but most sharks primarily feed on smaller fish and invertebrates. Some of the larger shark species prey on seals, sea lions, and other marine mammals,” states the agency on its website, adding that the big fishes have been known to attack humans when they are confused or curious.
The agency adds that if a shark sees a human splashing in the water, it may try to investigate, leading to an accidental attack. Still, sharks have more to fear from humans than we do of them. Humans hunt sharks for their meat, internal organs, skin, and fins in order to make products such as shark fin soup, lubricants, and leather.
