The arrival of something new always ends up causing a division of opinion at first. AI and cinema were no different. Since it was discovered that ‘The Brutalist’ or ‘Emilia Perez’ had used it in some processes, the controversy was served. Some see it as a trap that sullies the work and others consider that all help is welcome if the process looks better in the end.
Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix, is one of the latter. The businessman and head of the streaming giant believes that artificial intelligence is an advantage that cinema should not allow itself to ignore. In addition, he explains that it can not only be used to improve certain scenes, but it can become important in all phases that surround any great project.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos is in favor of the use of AI in film
It should also be noted, as James Cameron pointed out on the podcast ‘Boz To The Future’, that the cost of films can be greatly reduced thanks to AI. “There’s a lot of excitement about what AI can do for content creators. I also read that article about what James Cameron said about making movies 50% cheaper,” the Netflix CEO said at the conference to present the platform’s results.
Specifically, the director of ‘Titanic’, ‘Avatar’ and ‘The Abyss’ exclaimed that “if audiences want to continue to see movies like ‘Dune’ and ‘Dune: Part 2’, movies with a lot of visual effects, we have to find a way to cut the cost in half”.
On the other hand, Ted Sarandos believes that the use of AI should not be limited to a single facet, as its range of action can be infinite: “I am convinced that there is an even greater opportunity if we can make films 10 percent better. Today, our talent is using AI tools for set references, pre-visualization, VFX sequence preparation, shoot planning…“
