It’s been a big week for George Russell, even though he was unable to make the podium at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as he did in Austria, China and Bahrain. This time, however, the joys have come off the track, although with some relation to his sport: Formula 1.
The Briton has become another of the lucky 275 drivers of a Mercedes-AMG One, a hypercar with more than 1,000 horsepower. That’s because they come from a genuine Formula 1 engine, the 1.6 V6 hybrid from the 2016 season’s Mercedes W07, the one that crowned Nico Rosberg as champion.
In fact, the German was one of the first Formula 1 drivers to receive the keys to one of the units. He was later joined by others, such as David Coulthard and Valtteri Bottas. What about Lewis Hamilton? The seven-time world champion, who took part in its worldwide launch and ‘ordered’ the first unit, does not own one… for the moment. However, according to MARCA, he has one assigned to him
Like most of the AMG One that come out of the Brackley factory (it is assembled in the same facility as the Mercedes F1), George Russell’s car is personalised, in this case with a black body and the number 63 – the Briton’s F1 number – in different parts of its spectacular carbon shell.
Russell has already been able to show off his new car among his own teammates. In some images published on social networks, Mercedes-AMG’s team leader can be seen showing it off to Alex Albon… and even letting him take the wheel.
A three million euro beast
George Russell’s new toy costs between 2.5 and 3 million euros (depending on taxes) but, as always, the difficult thing – even if it is – is not to have the money, but to be on the list of chosen ones to own one… although being the star of the F1 team surely makes it much easier.
As well as being affordable for the Briton to drive… the fastest car in the world, at least if we take as a reference the Nürburgring Nordschleife track, where the AMG One reigns as the fastest production model. In addition to the 1,063 horsepower produced by its thermal engine and electric motors, its spectacular performance is also helped by active aerodynamics and electronics. Because the AMG One doesn’t even lack the famous ‘Party Mode’ that made Mercedes’ hybrid F1 cars almost unbeatable in qualifying.
