Connor McMichael scored twice and Logan Thompson made 14 of his 25 saves in the third period as the Washington Capitals beat the visiting Montreal Canadiens 3-1 on Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round matchup in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Dylan Strome also scored for Washington while Taylor Raddysh, Anthony Beauvillier, Ryan Leonard, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Tom Wilson notched assists.

Christian Dvorak got his first goal of the playoffs for the Canadiens, with Josh Anderson and Brendan Gallagher assisting. Sam Montembeault kept Montreal in the contest by stopping 29 shots.

A quiet first period that featured just 13 shots and no goals gave way to a second period that started at a frenetic pace. Washington and Montreal needed less than six minutes to match their combined shot total from the opening frame.

Dvorak put the Habs up 1:16 into the middle period when he fought through a crowd to sweep the loose puck in the crease under Thompson’s pads.

That advantage lasted for just 2:31 as McMichael evened the score after rebounding his own shot and banking it off Montreal defenseman David Savard into the net.

Strome, who assisted on all three goals in the Capitals’ Game 1 victory, got his first goal of the series exactly a minute later.

The Capitals dominated the period from that point, even if they did not pad their lead. They developed 11 high-danger scoring chances in the period in outshooting the Canadiens 18-8. Washington also held its guest without a shot for more than nine minutes.

Montreal ratcheted up the pressure in the third period, but the Habs could not get another puck past Thompson.

Jake Evans had an open goal, but hit the post on his short-angled shot with 12:50 left and Thompson was able to deflect the puck out of the crease. Anderson had a breakaway less than two minutes later that Thompson denied.

Thompson also came up with a couple more big saves in the final four minutes to preserve the lead. The Canadiens pulled Montembeault with two minutes remaining and McMichael iced the game on an empty-netter with less than two seconds left.

Jets 2025 NFL Draft takeaways: They went chalk — and that might not be a bad thing

Aaron Glenn’s goal at the outset of the offseason was to establish a brand, to set the tone. What’s that brand?“Tough, physical, violent, aggressive, resilient,” Glenn said. “If we continue to get guys like that, you’ll start to see the brand show up on the grass.”That thought process drove everything Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey did this offseason, in free agency and especially in the NFL Draft. They didn’t set out to make a splash — and they didn’t in free agency, outside of signing quarterback Justin Fields — but wanted to simply find the right people to fit what they want to do. For the last couple of years, the Jets had talent and big names. They made headlines, but it was a team that often faltered under pressure, struggling to handle adversity and sometimes failing to cultivate […]

Harry Kane criticises ‘crazy’ booking ruling him out of potential Bundesliga title-clincher

Harry Kane has criticised a “crazy” refereeing decision that will see him miss Bayern Munich’s game against RB Leipzig, when they could clinch the Bundesliga title.Kane was shown a yellow card in the 45th minute of Bayern’s 3-0 win over Mainz on Saturday. It was his fifth booking of the season, meaning that he will now serve a one-match suspension.AdvertisementWith Bayern 2-0 up in first half injury time, referee Bastian Dankert awarded a free kick for Mainz, which Kane delayed by not immediately releasing the ball. Dankert showed him a yellow card — which Kane described as a “crazy, crazy decision” — which potentially costs him the chance to be on the pitch when Bayern confirm their title at the Red Bull Arena next weekend.“Unfortunately, sometimes people come to the Allianz Arena and try to make a name for themselves,” […]

Seahawks 2025 NFL Draft takeaways: Wild card Jalen Milroe highlights offense-heavy class

In Mike Macdonald’s first season as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, the team had a below-average scoring offense and missed the playoffs.Macdonald then fired his offensive coordinator and made significant changes to the offensive staff. Seattle traded its starting quarterback, released one of the best wide receivers in franchise history (Tyler Lockett) and traded DK Metcalf. The Seahawks also entered the draft with very serious needs along the interior offensive line.AdvertisementThis is important context because it helps explain Seattle’s 11-man haul in the 2025 NFL Draft. Nine of the picks were spent on offense, including the top selection, guard Grey Zabel. He’s the first guard general manager John Schneider has ever drafted in the first round. Zabel turned out to be one of three college tackles the Seahawks drafted to play guard in the NFL.Seattle also drafted two receivers […]

Soft? Not these Cavaliers, who destroyed Heat in Game 3 amid trash-talking battle

MIAMI — Let’s get this part out of the way:It was either unfortunate timing, or just not the best look, for Darius Garland to go in on Tyler Herro and then not play the next game with a toe sprain.Likewise, it was either unfortunate timing or not the best look for Herro, and the Miami Heat, to respond as forcefully with their words to Garland as they did and then play as poorly as they did Saturday.AdvertisementYou could, if you wanted, try to make a case that the Cleveland Cavaliers’ dominance in a 124-87 win over Miami in Game 3 was a result of Garland’s teammates having his back, picking him up when he was not out there to walk the walk. You could try that, and the Cavs would meet you with an “ehhhh.”“Maybe a little bit, but I feel […]
