O atacante Jamie Vardy está de saída do Leicester após 13 temporadas. O clube inglês anunciou, nesta quinta-feira, que o contrato do jogador de 38 anos, o qual se encerra em junho, não será renovado e ele disputará seu último jogo no King Power Stadium, no dia 18 de maio, contra o Ipswich Town, pela penúltima rodada da Premier League.
Vardy chegou ao Leicester em 2012, vindo do Fleetwood Town, em uma transferência de 1 milhão de libras. No time inglês, o atacante foi um dos principais nomes na campanha do título histórico da Premier League, em 2015/16, além de conquistar a FA Cup, a Community Shield e dois títulos do Championship durante o período.
— Jamie é único. Ele é um jogador especial e uma pessoa ainda mais especial. Ele ocupa um lugar no coração de todos os que estão ligados ao Leicester City e certamente tem o meu mais profundo respeito e carinho. Sou infinitamente grato por tudo o que ele deu a este clube de futebol — disse Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, presidente do Leicester.
Vardy é o terceiro maior artilheiro da história do Leicester, com 198 gols em 496 partidas, e um dos grandes ídolos de todos os tempos do time. Suas atuações, inclusive, o fizeram disputar a Copa do Mundo de 2018 com a seleção inglesa.
Nas redes sociais, o atacante deixou uma mensagem de despedida aos torcedores do Leicester e disse que “fez o impossível” ao vencer o Campeonato Inglês. Vardy também destacou suas demais conquistas pelo clube, a campanha até as quartas de final da Liga dos Campeões e a fuga do rebaixamento.
— Estive aqui por tanto tempo que realmente achei que nunca fosse acabar. Não só tem sido muito difícil escrever isto, como também foi uma decisão extremamente difícil de tomar. O Leicester City foi minha segunda casa, minha família estendida, minha vida por 13 anos. O clube, a cidade, as pessoas significam muito para mim e para minha família — afirmou Vardy, que deixou claro que não pretende se aposentar:
— Quero continuar jogando e fazendo o que mais gosto, que é marcar gols. Espero que ainda venham um ou dois pelo Leicester até o fim da temporada, e muitos outros no futuro. Posso ter 38 anos, mas ainda tenho o desejo e a ambição de conquistar muito mais — finalizou.
Nesta temporada, no entanto, Vardy não conseguiu ajudar o Leicester na luta contra o rebaixamento na Premier League — o time caiu com cinco rodadas de antecedência. O atacante, inclusive, pediu desculpas ao torcedor em uma publicação em seu Instagram, na última segunda-feira, e não mediu palavras para tentar expressar a tristeza com a queda.
