Desde que llegara al Real Madrid en 2017, Walter Tavares es uno de los jugadores más condicionantes de Europa. Ahí está su reciente MVP de la Euroliga en marzo y abril con medias de 16,7 puntos, 7,1 rebotes y 0,9 tapones para 21,3 de valoración o su inclusión en el segundo mejor quinteto de la competición. Además, su tamaño le proporciona una capacidad de intimidación que modifica los ataques de los rivales, obligados a recular en sus entradas a canastas o a modificar el arco de sus lanzamientos para evitar el tapón.
El conjunto blanco es uno con el pívot caboverdiano y otro, más débil, sin él. Se pudo comprobar nuevamente este miércoles en el inicio de la serie de playoffs de la Euroliga ante el Olympiacos. El Madrid empezó mal, pero continuó aún peor cuando a Tavares le señalaron dos faltas personales -alguna más bien dudosa- a los cinco minutos y se tuvo que ir al banquillo. Acabó con siete puntos, dos rebotes, cuatro pérdidas, un tapón, tres faltas recibidas y 0 de valoración, su peor registro de la temporada habiendo jugado al menos 20 minutos.

Sin él en pista, los de El Pireo encontraron vía libre hacia el aro pues Bruno Fernando no tiene sus dotes defensivas y además estaba recién salido de una lesión. La temprana marcha al banquillo del coloso fue una de las claves en la escapada del Olympiacos, que se fue 25-8 y ya nunca tuvo ventajas por debajo de los 10 puntos.

Al acabar el encuentro, Tavares habló sobre sus habituales problemas de personales. En palabras a Eurohoops, se cuestionaba porqué “en todos los partidos importantes siempre me pitan dos faltas muy rápido en el primer cuarto. No sé qué está pasando. Con dos faltas rápidas, es difícil ser agresivo porque hay riesgo de hacer la tercera y la cuarta. Hago todo lo que puedo para no meterme en problemas de faltas tan rápido, pero parece imposible”.
Un mal arbitraje en El Pireo
La actuación de los colegiados en el primer encuentro dejó que desear. Al inicio permitieron una excesiva dureza al conjunto local, que además contrastó con la falta de intensidad de los visitantes. “Intentamos jugar en igualdad de condiciones y creo que ni nos dieron la oportunidad de que algunas faltas fueran a nuestro favor. Pero es normal, el Olympiacos juega en casa y eso supone mucha presión. Para nosotros, para los árbitros…”, valoró.

Tavares tampoco quiso poner el arbitraje como excusa para la derrota: “Da lo mismo. Fueron mejores que nosotros. El mal inicio nos costó el partido, ese es el resumen. No estábamos preparados, no teníamos la disciplina que hay que tener para jugar contra el Olympiacos”.

Para el segundo partido, el pívot recomienda “ajustar y estar listos desde el salto inicial. Sabemos que podemos ser mucho mejores en defensa, como parar a cualquiera. Pero, por alguna razón, en este partido no estábamos preparados. En el segundo intentaremos que sea al contrario y dar el máximo. Esa es la clave. Si no defendemos mejor, no ganaremos. El Olympiacos acabó primero por algo”.
