The talk about Chelsea’s interest in signing Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen is getting louder.
There are many clubs keen on the 20-year-old due to him having a £50million release in his contract, but Chelsea are deemed to be one of the front-runners.
Now Huijsen is not the only centre-back on their minds for this summer as they have a shortlist which also includes Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.

The signing of a central defender depends on exits and the club have to fund the purchase of a striker and a right-footed winger too. There are two questions to answer on the issue: why Chelsea are pursuing another player in this position at all and what are the ramifications for those centre-backs at the club?
Should another arrive, it will mean Chelsea could field a first XI with just centre-halves — and that does not include those being developed with the under-21s. Already on the the roster for 2025-26 are: Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah, Josh Acheampong, Renato Veiga, Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr.
Having 11 for two or three positions, head coach Enzo Maresca does play with three centre-backs on occasion, is too many.
It is no surprise that one of the factors behind Chelsea considering doing this is because of Fofana’s injury issues. He is still highly regarded at the club, but given he has started just 26 Premier League games since joining from Leicester City for £69.5million in 2022, they have to factor in his injury record.

Chelsea’s history of selling academy players for large fees to register pure profit on the books means some fans may be wondering if cashing in on Colwill has come into their thinking. Chelsea have ignored strong interest from clubs in the Premier League and abroad before. He is still being monitored by many teams. But sources, speaking anonymously to The Athletic to protect relationships, insist the England international is not for sale.
Chalobah is going to be a different story because Chelsea tried to sell the academy graduate last summer. They had to settle for a loan to Crystal Palace before recalling him in January due to Fofana suffering a severe hamstring injury in December. He has played 27 times (for both teams) this season, so that will help Chelsea’s chances of receiving a decent permanent fee. Chalobah, who is 26 in July, will want to continue playing regularly and join a leading club.

Two others expected to be in the outgoing column are Disasi and Veiga. The former was loaned out to Aston Villa in February and, as part of the agreement with his advisors, Chelsea said they would work together to find a permanent transfer for him in the next window. Villa do not have an option or obligation to buy as part of the loan agreement, which cost around £5million.
Veiga has impressed since joining Juventus on loan in January. Bought by Chelsea from FC Basel for €14million last July, the Portugal international grew frustrated at not playing in his preferred position as a left-sided centre-back, nor at getting many Premier League minutes. With Colwill first choice there, it means Chelsea are more likely to listen to offers for Veiga. Due to his rapid development at 21, the possibility of making a sizeable profit has further appeal.
There are no fears over another homegrown asset in Acheampong. Maresca admitted this month that he ‘loves’ Acheampong and there is no desire for him to go anywhere, even on loan. The 18-year-old, who was officially promoted from the under-21s in December, is seen as someone that can provide cover at right-back and in midfield.

Badiashile is another earmarked in the ‘stay’ category, but there is a more of a question mark over Tosin and whether he is content with a back-up role. He started 78 Premier League games for Fulham between 2020-24, but has just 13 starts for Chelsea following his free transfer from Craven Cottage last summer. The 27-year-old is respected for being one of the few natural leaders in the dressing room.
Chelsea signed Anselmino from Boca Juniors for £17million in August. He is 20 next week (April 29) and one for the future. Anselmino spent the rest of last year loaned back to Boca before being given time to adapt to Chelsea’s Cobham training base and living abroad in England, without the pressure of senior football, since January. He will be loaned out next season and there is interest from Champions League and Europa League clubs.

Sarr was bought from Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg for €14m in January in view of him joining Chelsea this summer. But with Strasbourg just four points off second place in Ligue 1 and on course to qualify for Europe, Chelsea are thinking about him staying on loan for a season so he can develop further.
There is likely to be five or six players making up the centre back department next season. That is more than enough to be starting games and providing cover, but not too many to cause a negative distraction.
