It’s official: The Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter, is heading to the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, why was Deion Sanders‘ reaction surprising as the Colorado Buffaloes coach watched his talent graduate to the NFL?
The 21-year-old was selected second overall, behind Cam Ward, in the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday, April 24 and finally completes his journey from a promising youngster to a professional footballer.
On the way, he produced a standout 2024/25 NCAA season by making 1258 yards and 15 touchdowns from 96 receptions as a receiver as he spurred the Buffaloes on to the Alamo Bowl.
But it wasn’t just his fine catching prowess that caught the eye as he also starred at Folsom Field, under Sanders‘ tutelage, as a cornerback and made 35 tackles (24 solo), 11 assisted, 11 pass deflections, four interceptions and a forced fumble.
It’s his dual talents that made him such an attractive prospect to the watching NFL teams with the chance to make him specialize in an area they desperately need, as well as securing a back-up too.
So it’s not a shock that he was picked second overall by the Jaguars, but Sanders made sure to keep his reaction under wraps; and although he could still be spotted applauding, it seemed fairly unenthusiastic.
What might have caused Sanders’ reaction?
The main reason why Sanders could have had relatively mild reaction, for someone known for his intriguing personality, is his mind may have been elsewhere in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Buffaloes’ coach is the father of Shedeur Sanders, who also entered the NFL Draft but didn’t find the same fortune. Initially a potential first pick overall, the 22-year-old quarterback has slid down the order.
In fact, Coach Prime’s kid has slipped so far that he wasn’t even picked in the First Round, and he now awaits to find out if he’s actually made it to the professional scene at all.
Concerns relate to Shedeur’s own personality as critics question his commitment to football, along with weaknesses in his game. Further questions are also about how involved his father is with his career.
Deion has made it no secret he holds influence over Shedeur and tried to stop him from joining specific teams he deemed undesirable, which was very off-putting for a lot of NFL coaches and this may have hurt the QB’s draft stock.
