Shedeur Sanders is facing an unexpected setback. The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft concluded without any team selecting the former Colorado star. Even the Las Vegas Raiders, a team widely speculated to be interested in him, passed on the young quarterback-a move that has led some analysts to question whether Tom Brady played a role in the decision.
In the weeks leading up to the draft, Sanders’ stock took a dramatic hit. Initially considered one of the top prospects in the 2025 class, his standing gradually declined, turning his draft fate into an enigma.
Throughout the pre-draft process, Sanders was linked to multiple teams, with the Raiders emerging as a frontrunner to select him in the first round. However, the team ultimately opted for running back Ashton Jeanty, a decision that left both Sanders’ supporters and critics puzzled.
Did Tom Brady influence the decision?
Analyst Skip Bayless captured the frustration of fans and media alike in an all-caps post on X (formerly Twitter): “ASHTON JEANTY WILL BE VERY GOOD. BUT HE WON’T BE AS VALUABLE AS SHEDEUR. SO I HAVE TO ASSUME TOM BRADY SAID NO TO SHEDEUR.”
FOX Sports’ Craig Carton also questioned the Raiders’ choice, stating: “Not a knock on Jeanty-he is probably the best running back in the draft. But when I say ‘Raiders,’ do either of you think, ‘Man, if they just had a running back, they would compete for a division title’? No.”
Brady, a minority shareholder in the Raiders, had been closely associated with Sanders. Many analysts viewed the seven-time Super Bowl champion as a mentor to the young quarterback, especially after Brady invited Sanders to a joint practice a couple of years ago. But none of that seemed to matter when it came down to it.
Shedeur Sanders remains optimistic
True to form, Sanders quickly broke his silence. “We all didn’t expect this, of course, but I feel like with God, anything’s possible, and I feel like this didn’t happen for no reason,” he said while watching the draft unfold.
Sanders may find solace in the fact that Brady himself was selected in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, with the 199th overall pick. “All this is, of course, fuel to the fire. Under no circumstances should this have happened, but we understand we’re onto bigger and better things,” Sanders declared.
