Lauren Hemp will return to Manchester City’s squad for their Women’s Super League (WSL) clash against Leicester City on Sunday after being sidelined for over five months with a knee injury.
Hemp was ruled out of England’s matches against the United States and Switzerland in November after undergoing knee surgery. City head coach Nick Cushing confirmed that the England international had returned to training, alongside club captain Alex Greenwood, and said the winger would be among the squad for Sunday’s match.

“The squad is looking slightly healthier than it has done over the past few weeks,” he said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. “We’ve had Alex [Greenwood] and Lauren [Hemp] in training.
“It’s been good to get them into competitive training and prepare them for the upcoming games. Lauren will be in the squad, that’s a huge boost for the club and we’ll continue to push the remaining players.
“We have a day before we need to pick the squad but that will give us confidence.”
Greenwood has been out since December after she was substituted 32 minutes into City’s Women’s Champions League win over St Polten, and subsequently underwent surgery on her medial collateral ligament (MCL).
Khadija “Bunny” Shaw has been another key City player to miss time in recent weeks through a muscle issue, with Cushing saying on Friday that the striker “won’t return imminently”.
Fourth-placed City are seven points behind third-placed Manchester United, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot with three matches of the WSL season remaining. The two rivals meet on May 4.
