In the fight for Christmas, the NFL seems to be winning.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday that the league intends to play three games on Christmas Day going forward, and it may cause the NBA to shift from a holiday that has long been associated with the league.
“We will clearly have three games every year,” Goodell said Friday on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Christmas Day has long been seen as the NBA’s marquee day. The league used the holiday to highlight its premier teams, players and rivalries and began building its schedule by figuring out which games would be played that day.
But the NBA has faced competition from the NFL in recent years, including two games in 2024 despite it coming on a Wednesday. Those were the first games the NFL had scheduled on a Wednesday since 1925 (aside from one rescheduled game impacted by COVID-19 in 2020).
The NFL will play three games on Christmas in 2025, with two games on Netflix and another on Amazon. The NBA will play on ABC.
The NFL’s Dec. 25 expansion could force the NBA to pivot and find new playing windows in the future. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said last week that the league could consider moving some games to Christmas Eve or other important viewing windows, though he said he doesn’t have an issue with the NFL encroaching on its big day.
“I would never even suggest — first of all, (Roger Goodell) wouldn’t listen to me anyway — but I think the NFL should do what’s in the best interest of the NFL,” Silver said, also while on McAfee’s show. “So I have no issue with that whatsoever. In terms of looking at — I’m not saying we’re going to move away from Christmas because the NFL is also on, but I think our players recognize that, you know, we work on the holidays, and whether it’s Christmas or Christmas Eve or there’s other opportunities where people are home and are more likely to have free time to watch our telecast, we should be looking at other dates as well. So that’s something we’re constantly exploring.”
The NBA has only played two games on Christmas Eve in its history and not since the 1960s. The Seattle Supersonics and San Francisco Warriors played on Christmas Eve in 1967 and the Detroit Pistons played the Boston Celtics in 1960.

Silver said if the NBA were to play on another day it could allow more teams to play on those occasions and increase their exposure. The NBA will begin its new 11-year, $75 billion media rights deal next season and it could bring some changes to its schedule, like the timing of its NBA Cup, as it brings in new media partners in NBC and Amazon.
He also said he believed higher viewership for live sports would benefit everyone.
“I welcome the NFL,” Silver said. “I welcome the competition. It makes us better, too.”
