Nascido em Nova Jersey, nos EUA, o adversário de João Fonseca também começou a carreira com importantes títulos antes de entrar no circuito profissional. Em grand slams, o melhor desempenho de Tommy Paul foi no Australian Open de 2023. Ele chegou até a semifinal, mas foi vencido por Novak Djokovic, então número 1 do mundo, por 2 sets a 1. Em outras oportunidades, no entanto, ele teve mais sucesso e deixou para trás tenistas do top-10 do mundo.
