V milionářské soutěži dlouho platilo, že skupinovou fázi hrálo 32 klubů, které se rozdělily do osmi skupin. Každý odehrál šest zápasů, dva nejlepší týmy z každé skupiny postoupily do osmifinále. Hráči, kteří se dostali až do finále, odehráli 13 utkání.
Letos je to ale úplně jinak. Skupinovou fázi nahradila ligová, která se rozšířila o čtyři týmy. Každý narazí na osm různých soupeřů. Nejlepší osmička postoupí rovnou do osmifinále, dalších šestnáct se o něj musí poprat v předkole play off. Počet zápasů, do kterých finalisté zasáhnou, se zvýšil na 15, s předkolem play off dokonce na 17.
I proto se nabízí hráčům ulevit. Podle německého deníku Bild se spekuluje o třech změnách:
1) Konec prodloužení
Ve vyřazovací fázi by se nehrálo prodloužení. O postupujícím by rovnou rozhodl penaltový rozstřel.
2) Lépe umístěné týmy budou hrát odvety doma
V současnosti platí, že v předkole play off mají týmy na 9.-16. místě ligové fáze jistotu domácí odvety proti tabulkově horším soupeřům. I nejlepší osmička hraje druhé osmifinále vždy před vlastními fanoušky. Od čtvrtfinále o pořadateli ale rozhoduje los. V dalším ročníku by mohl mít lepší tým ligové fáze výhodu až do semifinále.
3) Kluby ze stejné země se utkají až od čtvrtfinále
Momentálně platí, že týmy ze stejné země na sebe mohou narazit okamžitě po skončení ligové fáze. V aktuálním ročníku hrály v play off PSG s Brestem, v osmifinále Bayern s Leverkusenem a Real s Atlétikem. Uvažuje se o návratu ke starým pořádkům, kdy se podobné duely mohly nalosovat až ve čtvrtfinále.
Klubová soutěžní komise by změny mohla projednat už 30. května v Mnichově a následně je navrhnout výkonnému výboru UEFA.
