The New Orleans Saints selected Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough with the No. 40 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He’s the third quarterback off the board behind Cam Ward (No. 1) and Jaxson Dart (No. 25).
Shough, 25, is exactly one year older than his new teammate Spencer Rattler and eight days older than Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence, who is entering his fifth season in the NFL. He will begin his NFL journey after a well-traveled college career. A four-star recruit out of Chandler, Ariz., in the class of 2018, Shough committed to Oregon, where he backed up current Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert as a redshirt freshman.

He transferred to Texas Tech in 2021 but missed time with injuries (two of which were season-ending) in each of his three seasons with the Red Raiders. Shough transferred to Louisville for his final collegiate season in 2024, leading the Cardinals to a 9-4 record.
Shough’s only full season as a starting quarterback doubled as the best statistical performance of his career. His 3,195 passing yards in 2024 ranked 14th among all quarterbacks in FBS, while his 23 passing touchdowns were tied for 22nd. Shough finished the season second in Louisville program history in passing yards per game and passing touchdowns per game.
One of Shough’s biggest wins of the season came at Death Valley, where the Cardinals upset No. 11 Clemson 33-21. He finished the game 17-for-32 for 156 yards and a rushing touchdown in Louisville’s first win over Clemson in school history.
‘The Beast’ breakdown
Shough ranked No. 50 in Dane Brugler’s top 300 big board. Here’s what Brugler had to say about him in his annual draft guide.
“With his drive velocity and body fluidity, Shough can make impressive rip-and-zip throws from a variety of arm slots and is a better athlete than expected, which helps him keep plays alive. His ability to expedite his process when the pocket deteriorates is promising, but he needs to improve his eye discipline to stay in sync with receivers when reading full progressions. Overall, Shough is overaged and needs to cut back on some of the high-risk passing decisions, but he is a gifted thrower with the functional mobility to work off schedule. He has the tools to work his way up a depth chart and make plays once on the field.”
Tyler Shough reminds me so much of Derek Carr. Arm talent, panics under pressure, athletic but kind of clumsy pic.twitter.com/n95EvyUI51
