Graham Potter suggested West Ham United’s players need to be held accountable following their 3-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Potter’s side were leading 2-1 in the 83rd minute — courtesy of Tomas Soucek’s eighth league goal of the season — but capitulated following goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Carlos Baleba in the 89th minute and stoppage time.

It is the fifth time since March that West Ham have struggled to see out games, having dropped points late against Everton, Bournemouth, Liverpool and Southampton in that timeframe.
“The players are in a bad situation in terms of the season we’re having so there’s a lot of baggage there,” said Potter in his post-match press conference.
“You have to sustain the good things and see out the times when things get tough. We weren’t about to do that. We have to look at how we can support players towards the back end of games. What substitutions we can make to shut up shop. But in the end the players are there as well, I’m having to answer these questions when the players are on the pitch.
“We did a lot of good things in the game but the pain (of losing) is pretty hard and we’re devastated. We’re unable to sustain what we need to do to win games in the Premier League at the moment.
“That’s the reality of the last few games. We haven’t been able to hold on for different reasons. There’s a requirement in this league to be physically and mentally strong to see out winning situations in difficult situations like Goodison Park, Anfield and here.
“We weren’t able to do so everything is focused on that, which is a shame because there’s lots of good things in the game. But I can’t take solace from that because we’ve lost.”
West Ham are winless in their last seven Premier League games, their longest run since January 2023. Their last victory was against Leicester City on February 27.
“Honestly, I don’t want to speak about anything positive because I’m in too much pain to talk about positives,” Potter said. “No one wants to hear that now, although there were some. We’ve lost, two goals have gone in from 35 metres, congratulations to Brighton, we’re suffering.
“I’m not a robot, I’m a human being as well. I give everything to what I’m doing. Of course I’m going to be upset and frustrated. I have to come here and speak calmly to you guys, but that’s not how I’m feeling inside. If you want me to swear, I can swear.”

Potter has won three of his 14 league games since his appointment as head coach in January. West Ham remain 17th following the defeat to Brighton ahead of upcoming games against Tottenham Hotspur (home), Manchester United (away), Nottingham Forest (h) and Ipswich Town (a).
