Harry Kane has criticised a “crazy” refereeing decision that will see him miss Bayern Munich’s game against RB Leipzig, when they could clinch the Bundesliga title.
Kane was shown a yellow card in the 45th minute of Bayern’s 3-0 win over Mainz on Saturday. It was his fifth booking of the season, meaning that he will now serve a one-match suspension.

With Bayern 2-0 up in first half injury time, referee Bastian Dankert awarded a free kick for Mainz, which Kane delayed by not immediately releasing the ball. Dankert showed him a yellow card — which Kane described as a “crazy, crazy decision” — which potentially costs him the chance to be on the pitch when Bayern confirm their title at the Red Bull Arena next weekend.
“Unfortunately, sometimes people come to the Allianz Arena and try to make a name for themselves,” Kane told reporters after the game. “He could hardly wait to show me the yellow card.”
Kane, who is yet to win a major trophy in his career, also spoke out against the regulation system in German football. In the Premier League, yellow cards accumulated expire after certain periods during the season. In the Bundesliga, no such amnesty exists, meaning that player’s tallies run for the entire length of the campaign.
“That’s why I’m really disappointed that I got the yellow card, because of course I knew that I already had four. And secondly, I think the rule is crazy anyway. Five yellow cards in 34 games mean a suspension. This is crazy.
“You should regulate them like in the Premier League. I’m missing an important game because I got a yellow card in the first game of the season. That doesn’t make sense. Maybe you should think about it for the future.”
Bayern have an eight-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen, who won 2-0 against Augsburg. With only three games of the season remaining, a win in Leipzig will see them crowned champions. Alternatively, should Leverkusen fail to win in Freiburg on Saturday, Bayern will be champions regardless.
And Kane has promised not to allow his suspension to ruin the occasion.
“It’s a bit of a story that I’m missing the game in Leipzig. But don’t worry, I’ll celebrate more than anyone else.”
