The 2025 NFL Draft was expected to be a historic moment for Shedeur Sanders, but as the rounds pass and his name remains uncalled, frustration and outrage have flooded across sports media and social platforms.
Sanders, who had a standout season at Colorado, entered the draft as one of the most highly rated quarterbacks, yet now finds himself at the center of a brewing controversy.
What a nightmare! Shedeur Sanders reacts to getting a prank call during the NFL Draft
Despite throwing for over 4,100 yards and 37 touchdowns last season, Sanders was overlooked on the draft’s first night by teams desperate for quarterback help, including the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Day 2 brought little relief. Three more quarterbacks – Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe, and Dillon Gabriel – were selected while Sanders continued to wait for his opportunity.
The unexpected fall has led many to draw stark parallels to Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback who was exiled after his national anthem protests.
While there’s no confirmed evidence of collusion, many believe there are striking similarities between the two situations.
Stephen A. Smith and fans voice outrage over Sanders’ draft snub
Appearing on ESPN, Stephen A. Smith expressed his anger at the league’s apparent mishandling of Sanders‘ draft stock.
“This kid is a first rounder. In a different way, this is Kaepernick all over again…..being kept out. A disgrace. I don’t care what anyone says,” Smith said.
“All the hard work the NFL League Office puts in to eradicate these kinds of perceptions, only to turn around and watch as the OWNERS look like they’re colluding, messing up everything.
“What has been done to Shedeur will outshine everything else in this draft. We’ll never believe this is about just talent evaluation again.”
Social media users quickly rallied behind Smith’s remarks.
One fan posted, “The NFL owners clearly collaborated to send a message to Shedeur Sanders and his dad. It’s not about loyalty to fans or talent, it’s about loyalty to each other. Stay in line or get blackballed. It’s giving Colin Kaepernick.”
Another wrote, “Is Shedeur Sanders being Colin Kaepernick‘d before he even gets to play in the league?? Wtf. This is heartbreaking to watch. Come on NFL.”
Critics also accused NFL insiders of shielding the league from proper scrutiny.
“These media folks are lying to say that these NFL teams are not colluding against Shedeur,” one frustrated fan tweeted.
“It’s the same thing they did with the Kaepernick situation. They lied, danced around questions, and tried to deflect the responsibility because they’re scared to criticize the owners.”
While many insiders maintain that Sanders‘ fall is simply a matter of team preferences and positional needs, the perception that he is being blackballed is growing louder with each passing round.
As the draft heads into its final day, Sanders remains one of the top talents still available. Whether a team takes a chance on him – and how soon – could shape not only his future, but also the narrative of the 2025 NFL Draft itself.
