Prince William stood among world leaders at the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday, while Kate Middleton remained notably absent from the solemn event at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
The Prince of Wales, 42, traveled to Italy to represent the British royal family, fulfilling a key duty after the death of the beloved pontiff at the age of 88.
Bizarre! Kate Middleton’s Mother’s Day tribute takes unexpected turn
The absence of the Princess of Wales, 43, caught some attention, especially since the spouses of other dignitaries, such as Melania Trump and Dr. Jill Biden, were present alongside their husbands, President Trump and former President Joe Biden. However, royal tradition offers a clear explanation.
According to longstanding protocol, it is not customary for the spouse of a British royal to be required at state funerals.
This mirrors the precedent set in 2005, when then-Prince Charles attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II alone, even though he was scheduled to marry Camilla Parker Bowles the very next day.
Why Prince William attended alone and Kate Middleton remained home
In addition to royal custom, Middleton‘s recent health challenges likely played a role. Following her cancer treatment, which concluded last September, the Princess has been selective about her public engagements.
According to Town and Country, she is expected to make her return to public life with a two-day visit to the Scottish Isles next month.
Meanwhile, Prince William took on the responsibility of representing King Charles III and the royal family at the funeral.
Buckingham Palace protocol dictates that reigning monarchs traditionally do not attend funerals, a rule King Charles, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, adhered to by remaining in the UK.
The ceremony itself was a profound moment for the Catholic Church and the wider world.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, captured the spirit of mourning and gratitude, stating: “His whole life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.
“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized.”
Farrell concluded by saying, “With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the Triune God.”
Pope Francis’ death came following a difficult battle with double pneumonia, and the official cause was later confirmed to be a stroke. His passing marked the end of an era for many Catholics and world leaders who had admired his leadership and compassion.
Reflecting on the loss, King Charles III shared his own tribute, emphasizing the late pope’s lasting influence.
“His belief that care for Creation is an existential expression of faith in God resounded with so many across the world,” Charles said in a statement.
“Through his work and care for both people and planet, he profoundly touched the lives of so many.”
Though Kate Middleton was not physically present at the Vatican, the royal family’s respect and recognition for Pope Francis’ legacy were deeply felt through Prince William‘s participation.
