O Botafogo reencontrou-se consigo mesmo e voltou a vencer depois de quatro partidas irreconhecíveis. Do lado do Fluminense, a derrota foi a primeira sob o comando de Renato Gaúcho depois de sete jogos. Sete, inclusive, era o jejum de partidas sem vitória contra o Botafogo. Jesus ainda colocou uma bola na trave antes do fim do primeiro tempo, que terminou com cinco arremates no gol e nenhum do rival.
Com Ganso bem marcado, o Fluminense conseguia articular algumas jogadas no meio, mas a bola não chegava em Cano. E quando chegava, o desarme vinha rapidamente. No segundo tempo, Renato Gaúcho optou por mais meias para brigar pela posse de bola e tirou Ganso. O time subiu de produção. Aos 27 minutos , o Fluminense quase empatou na bola parada.
