Every NFL Draft is important for every team, but that’s especially true for a team coming off of a brutal loss in the most important game, picking at the back-end of the first round. Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has gotten used to having to get creative to come away with good draft hauls while picking late every year, but this year was different.
Kansas City came into this draft with clear needs, having been unable to address all of them thoroughly through free agency. Patrick Mahomes needed help on the offensive line and at the skill positions. The defense needed role players to keep Steve Spagnuolo‘s unit humming. Veach got it done once again. And everyone noticed.
Got a stud! Mahomes and the Chiefs brag about his new protection that would be a problem for the NFL
Chiefs’ draft ranks as Top 5 in many NFL analysts’ eyes
The Chiefs’ final draft class came out like this.
- Round 1 (32): Josh Simmons, OT, Ohio State
- Round 2 (63): Omarr Norman-Lott, DT, Tennessee
- Round 3 (66): Ashton Gillotte, DE, Louisville
- Round 3 (85): Nohl Williams, CB, California
- Round 4 (133): Jalen Royals, WR, Utah State
- Round 5 (156): Jeffrey Bassa, LB, Oregon
- Round 7 (228): Brashard Smith, RB, SMU
According to Warren Sharp of Sharp Football, the Chiefs’ draft ranked as the sixth-best in terms of “value”. Sharp wasn’t the only one singing Veach’s praises.
Pro Football Focus gave them an “A” grade, and said: “They nailed their draft with selections like Josh Simmons and Omarr Norman-Lott.” Sam Monson of The 33rd Team had them in his five favorite draft hauls among all teams. And according to the consensus big board, the Chiefs had the third-best draft of any team.
By most accounts, the Chiefs left the draft come to them. Veach has been aggressive in drafts in recent years, but he played a more reserved role this year. He still traded up to secure Williams, but he picked up players who should have gone sooner in many analysts’ eyes.
Veach’s solid draft comes at a crucial time for the Chiefs. 2025 could be the last season of Travis Kelce‘s career and the Chiefs’ veterans aren’t getting younger. The roster needed an influx of young talent at key positions, and Veach delivered like he always has.
