Sparta, povzbuzená středeční výhrou nad Plzní v semifinále MOL Cupu, mohla jít zkraje utkání do vedení. Po dlouhém autu Jaroslava Zeleného se míč odrazil k Martinovi Vitíkovi, který ze tří kroků přestřelil.
Domácí následně zahrozili pohlednou kombinační akcí, na jejímž konci Pavel Šulc poslal oblouček na zadní tyč, kde před Matějem Vydrou zachraňoval ve vzduchu Jaroslav Zelený.
V 17. minutě měl velkou šanci plzeňský Cadu, namísto střely z jedné ale balon zasekl, čímž prováhal možnost k zakončení. Za dalších deset minut Doosan Arena málem slavila gól.
V levém rohu velkého vápna napřáhl Šulc, jeho povedený obstřel pravačkou vytáhl Peter Vindahl na tyč. Vzápětí přišla značná nepříjemnost pro Spartu, když kvůli zranění přišla o Veljka Birmančeviče.
Po několikaminutové hluché pasáži v nastavení prvního poločasu udeřila Plzeň. Po chybě Adama Ševínského šli domácí do přečíslení, přihrávku Šulce tečoval ve skluzu Elias Cobbaut do břevna vlastní brány. Míč, který se odrazil na malé vápno pak uklidil do sítě hlavou Amar Memič.
Krátce poté ale přišla pro Plzeň velká rána. Po srážce s Vitíkem byl dvakrát ošetřovaný brankář Martin Jedlička, který nakonec nenastoupil do druhé půle. Mezi tyče musel Viktor Baier.
Viktoria mohla Spartě odskočit na dva góly v xx minutě. Po ťukesu Šulc – Vydra – Prince Adu nastřelil ghanský útočník tyč. Vzápětí u letenskou síť rozvlnil po trestném kopu Sampson Dweh, VAR však odhalil 17centimetrový ofsajd plzeňského stopera.
Sparta potřebovala nutně bodovat, trenér Lars Friis nasadil postupně do hry útočné typy. Včetně ekvádorského křídelníka Angela Preciada, který nastoupil do zápasu po půl roce.
Jenže hned z první akce po jeho příchodu na trávník domácí podruhé udeřili. Adu se prodral až do šestnáctky, jeho střelu sice obránci zablokovali, odražený míč už Šulc poslal neomylně do brány. Další brance Západočechů zabránil jasně nejlepší sparťan na hřišti Vindhal, který fantasticky lapil hlavičku Šulce z malého vápna.
Když 10 minut před koncem odstoupil zraněný Matěj Ryneš a Friis už za něj nemohl vyslat náhradu (všechna střídání už předtím využil), bylo jasné, že Plzeň dokráčí ke třem bodům.
