There was no doubt that, whatever happened in the Draft, for better or worse, Shedeur Sanders would steal all the spotlight in Green Bay. And he did – but unfortunately, for the worse, for the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback.
At the beginning of the year, Shedeur was projected to be picked very early in the NFL Draft, but he wasn’t selected until pick No. 144 in the fifth round, when the Cleveland Browns chose him – a franchise that currently has five quarterbacks on its roster, which will undoubtedly soon turn into a conflict.
New York Giants vs Detroit Lions training camp fight
One of the teams that had been linked to Shedeur Sanders since last year was the New York Giants, who ultimately closed the door on the high-profile player. Instead, they made a trade late in the first round with the Houston Texans to move up and select Jaxson Dart, quarterback from Ole Miss, at pick No. 25 – passing over Sanders.
The reasons why the Giants didn’t pick Shedeur were leaked
At one point, the Giants were even considered favorites to take Shedeur Sanders with the third overall pick. But that possibility faded once they signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency – especially after it leaked that Shedeur wasn’t willing to sit on the bench and wait his turn.
NFL analyst Todd McShay from The Ringer revealed that the Giants had no plans to select Sanders because a private meeting with Head Coach Brian Daboll went poorly.
“Shedeur didn’t have a great interview with Brian Daboll during a private visit,” said McShay. “He was presented with an installation packet of plays but wasn’t prepared for it. [Sanders] was confronted about it. He didn’t like that. And Brian didn’t like that he didn’t like it.”
“There were two teams picking in the top 10, both in need of a quarterback, where the interviews didn’t go well. It wasn’t that Sanders was disrespectful or anything serious – they just felt like, ‘He didn’t give us the feeling that he really cared what we thought of him.'”
Perhaps those were the reasons why not just the Giants, but practically every quarterback-needy team, passed on Sanders. A total of 143 players were selected before Shedeur’s name was finally called.
