Zweifel vorm ersten Spiel – So kam es zum Bruch zwischen Schalke und van Wonderen

Dieses plötzliche Trainer-Beben hatte die Schalke-Bosse total überrascht. Nach dem Spiel gegen den HSV (2:2) vergangene Woche verkündete Kees van Wonderen (56/Vertrag bis 2026) lieber selbst sein vorzeitiges Aus. Der Holländer: „Für mich ist klar, dass ich nach dieser Saison nicht mehr hier bin. Alle Signale dafür sind da.“ Die offizielle Bestätigung vom Verein gab es dann am Mittwoch.

Van Wonderen klagte die Verantwortlichen um Vorstands-Chef Matthias Tillmann (49) dazu bitterböse an: „Ich will hier arbeiten, wenn man auf derselben Linie und demselben Weg ist. Aber das ist nicht so. Wenn man auf einem Weg ist, muss man da­rauf bleiben. Und nicht einmal nach links, dann nach rechts. Du musst einen Trainer suchen – und musst dahinterstehen. Und wenn das nicht passiert, ist es besser, wenn jemand anders diesen Weg geht.“

Schalke hat den nächsten Trainer (schon der achte seit 2020) aufgefressen. SPORT BILD erklärt, wie es zum Bruch zwischen den Bossen und van Wonderen kam.

[–>► Die erste Irritation gab’s bereits vorm Liga-Debüt. Der ­Geraerts-Nachfolger wollte sich nicht für eine Nummer 1 entscheiden, sondern inszenierte ein ungewöhnliches Torwart-Casting. Er gab Ron-Thorben Hoffmann (26/inzwischen zu Ex-Klub Braunschweig geflüchtet) und Justin Heekeren (24) je zwei Pflicht-Partien. Dass dann auch van Wonderen – wie vorher schon Geraerts – Heekeren zum Stammkeeper machte, soll vor allem Kader-Konstrukteur und Hoffmann-Fürsprecher Ben Manga (51) enttäuscht haben.

► Bei seiner Pleite-Premiere in Hannover (0:1) ließ van Wonderen extrem defensiv spielen. Aus Klub-Kreisen ist zu hören, dass Tillmann schon seither Zweifel habe, ob er der richtige Trainer sei, um die Arena konstant mit Attacke-Fußball anzuzünden.

► Nach dem Desaster gegen Kaiserslautern (0:3) bot van Wonderen bei Manga und Sportdirektor Youri Mulder (56) seinen Rücktritt an. Angesichts von vier Niederlagen und nur einem Sieg in sieben Pflichtspielen wollte er hinschmeißen. Das kostete ihn sowohl in der skeptischen Chef-Etage als auch in der komplizierten Kabine einiges an Autorität. Und er musste registrieren, dass seine Vorgesetzten schnell bei Friedhelm Funkel (71) anfragten.

► Als der Traum von einer Aufholjagd (befeuert durch drei Top-Auftritte vor der Winterpause) in den ersten Rückrunden-­Wochen wieder platzte, war der Bosse-Glaube an van Wonderen offenbar endgültig erschüttert. Neben der Sportvorstand-Suche startete daher auch die Diskussion, wen Schalke als Aufstiegs-Trainer holen könne. Der Krisen-Klub flirtete mit einer Rückkehr von Welt-Star Rául (49) und kontaktierte Ex-Coach Domenico Tedesco (39), der aber absagte (SPORT BILD berichtete).

► Schließlich beeilte sich Neu-Sportvorstand Frank Baumann (49), der offiziell am 1. Juni startet und einen Vertrag bis 2030 hat, auf den Klub-Kanälen zu erklären, er werde mit Manga und Mulder weiterarbeiten – über den Trainer verlor er kein Wort.
