Cameron Brink feels looking good can help on-court performance amid WNBA makeup debate

As the WNBA gains more recognition and popularity, its athletes are increasingly paying attention to how they present themselves, both on and off the court. One key element of this shift is the rise of makeup use among players, with many opting to glam up during games.

While the WNBA still prioritizes athleticism and performance, players like Cameron Brink are embracing the idea that looking good can complement playing well. The result? A growing trend of makeup use on the court.

Not every player in the league follows this trend-some still choose to keep their makeup routines simple, or skip it altogether. For example, Cameron Brink, Stanford’s star and a rising WNBA talent, keeps her makeup minimal for games. She opts for concealer, powder, mascara, eyeliner, and blush, but avoids foundation. However, Brink humorously admits that by the end of warmups, much of her makeup becomes redundant as she turns “tomato red” from exertion.

This contrasts with players like Dijonai Carrington, who sport a full face of makeup while playing. It’s clear that players are experimenting with their looks and finding what works for them. For some, makeup is part of their game-day routine, while others prefer to stay natural.

Has social media influenced this trend?

In a recent episode of her podcast Straight to Cam, Brink addressed the rise of makeup in the WNBA. She pointed to the broader societal trend of increased focus on personal image, largely driven by social media.

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have created an environment where beauty tutorials and “get ready with me” videos have become mainstream, making makeup more accessible and appealing to younger generations. This shift has carried over into the world of sports, where athletes now have the opportunity to express their personal style both on and off the court.

Brink also suggested that the WNBA‘s growing popularity and higher-profile events contribute to this trend.

Unlike previous years, when players would often enter arenas in casual outfits, the league now boasts more grandiose venues and “fit checks” for players as they walk through game-day tunnels. This added attention to their appearance has encouraged many players to pair their outfits with makeup, making a statement not only with their skills but with their overall style.

The increasing use of makeup in the WNBA reflects a broader cultural shift in how athletes are embracing self-expression. The rise of glam in the league isn’t just about vanity-it’s about confidence, empowerment, and showcasing a complete personal brand. Just as players carefully curate their outfits, they now think about their makeup as part of their identity, both as athletes and individuals.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Bring Chaos, Not Clarity, Through First 10 Days

The first 10 days of the Stanley Cup Playoffs have provided plenty of excitement and suspense — but little separation. That’s especially been the case in the clustered eight-team Western Conference, where establishing a clear favorite has been virtually impossible. Each of the four first-round series in the West were knotted 2-2 before the Dallas Stars became the first to break the deadlock with a 6-2 win against the visiting Colorado Avalanche in Game 5 on Monday night, giving them a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven series. Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said after the win that he sensed many doubted the Stars following their 4-0 loss in Game 4. “They feed off people doubting them,” DeBoer said. On the other hand, many expected the Winnipeg Jets to breeze through the first round after winning the Presidents’ Trophy with the best record […]
