Shedeur Sanders was perhaps the biggest story of the 2025 NFL Draft, as he had to wait until the fifth round on Saturday before being selected by the Cleveland Browns. He received a prank call on Friday night, the second day of the Draft, while he was waiting.
Sanders, a standout Colorado QB, is the son of Buffaloes head coach and Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who began his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons.
Shedeur Sanders jumped in the pool after getting Drafted.
It was precisely within that team that the NFL’s investigations pointed after it became known of a cruel telephone prank on Shedeur while he nervously watched pick after pick and round after round go by without being selected by any franchise
The author (or authors) of the joke
The Falcons declared Sunday that the son of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was responsible for a prank phone call to Colorado QB, in the context of the 2025 Draft, in which a person identified himself as New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and told Sanders that he had been selected by the Saints before ending the call.
The team issued a statement saying that 21-year-old Jax Ulbrich“accidentally found Shedeur Sanders’ contact phone number on an open iPad while visiting his parents’ home and wrote it down to later prank call him”. Although Jax Ulbrich provided the number, he was sitting next to an unidentified friend who was the one who called Sanders.
The Falcons claimed Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of the data exposure or the joke until after the fact. They offered “sincere apologies to Shedeur Sanders and his family” in their statement, and Jax Ulbrich also issued a public apology on social media.
Sanders, Ulbrich and the Falcons react
“It really didn’t affect me, because I just thought, ‘OK. I don’t feed negativity or that stuff,'” Sanders said Saturday after being selected. “…That’s the way it is. I think, of course, it’s childish, of course I feel like it was a childish act, but everyone commits childish acts from time to time.”
Jax Ulbrich apologized to Sanders on Sunday for what he called “a tremendous mistake“: “Shedeur, what I did was completely inexcusable, embarrassing and shameful,” he wrote on social media. “I’m so sorry for stealing a moment from you; it was selfish and childish. I never imagined preparing to celebrate one of the greatest moments of your life and I made a terrible mistake and ruined it. Thank you for taking my call today; I hope you can find it in your heart the strength to forgive me“.
The Falcons also apologised to Sanders and his family, stating that they do not tolerate this behaviour: “We are thoroughly reviewing all protocols and updating them as necessary to help prevent an incident like this from happening again,” the Falcons said.
The Falcons said they have been in contact with the NFL “and will continue to cooperate fully with any inquiries we may receive from the league office.”
