Tai Tuivasa (15-8) is not having the best time. The Australian fighter has not known victory since 2022, with five consecutive defeats in the heavyweight division – four by finish – which have left him in a very difficult situation in the UFC. Even more worrying were his recent statements in an interview with Ariel Helwani, where he admitted to currently weighing 140 kilos. Due to this, Tai does not plan to reappear until early 2026, once he has rediscovered a better version of himself.
That was unexpected! Kamaru Usman freaks out MMA fans who were talking trash about him
“My goal is to come back early next year. I need to get back in the gym, I need to get fit,” ‘Bam Bam’ acknowledged. It should not be forgotten that the UFC heavyweight limit is 120.2 kg, so the Australian needs to get his act together if he wants to make the required weight on the scales. After almost a year out of action, Tuivasa has let himself go, becoming the subject of ridicule on social media for his exaggerated weight gain.
I need to go back to the gym, I need to get fit
If that wasn’t enough, a video of him training striking at a level that fans consider not worthy of a UFC fighter has also gone viral. For one reason or another, Tuivasa has gone from being one of the most beloved fighters by fans to worrying those same fans, who have advised him through social media to return to a healthy lifestyle that will allow him to be the fighter who managed to chain five KOs in a row
A painful fall into hell
This good run made him known within the company, winning the hearts of fans with his famous ‘shoey’, which consisted of filling a shoe with beer and drinking it in one gulp. Tuivasa knocked out the likes of Derrick Lewis, but his fight with Ciryl Gane was the beginning of a downward spiral that has led him to his current situation. The Frenchman knocked him out in the third round, and in his next appearance Sergei Pavlovich did the same in the first round to lower the ‘hype’ that was on ‘Bam Bam’.
After almost a year out, the Australian reappeared at the end of 2023, and on this occasion was submitted by Alexander Volkov, the same as Marcin Tybura would do to him six months later. In August last year, Jairzinho Rozenstruik inflicted the last defeat on Tuivasa’s record, although this time by split decision after a fight that left much to be desired.
At the moment, the news about Tai is not very encouraging, and it remains to be seen whether for that return he plans in 2026 he will once again be the great fighter he once was. At 32 years of age, he still has time to get back to his best, and who knows if he will be able to star in a beautiful redemption story
