The San Francisco 49ers extended a star player Tuesday, just not the one everyone expected. Tight end George Kittle reportedly inked a four-year, $75.4 million extension, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Kittle is guaranteed $40 million as part of the deal. The contract makes Kittle the highest-paid tight end in the NFL.

The deal comes with Kittle on the verge of free agency. After signing a five-year, $75 million extension with the team in 2020, Kittle was entering the final year of his contract. His new deal keeps him in San Francisco through the 2029 NFL season.
Kittle, 31, emerged as one of the league’s best tight ends since being selected by the 49ers in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. After showing promising skills as a rookie, Kittle burst onto the scene with a 1,377-yard, 5 touchdown season his second year in the league. Since then, he’s been a consistent weapon in the 49ers’ passing attack. In his eight seasons in the NFL, Kittle has 7,380 receiving yards and 45 touchdowns. He’s a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro selection.
He’s also provided a safety blanket for 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Over his career, Purdy has relied on Kittle more than any other pass catcher. Kittle has caught 20 of Purdy’s 64 career touchdown passes, more than any other player.

Much of the 49ers’ offseason has centered around figuring out a long-term contract for quarterback Purdy. While the Kittle deal is large, it should not affect Purdy’s contract. Kittle’s deal ensures Purdy will retain his favorite target whenever he decides to sign his mega-extension to stay in San Francisco.
After a disappointing season, in which the team went 6-11, the 49ers are looking to rebound in 2025. Kittle will play an even bigger role in the team righting the ship after it traded away Deebo Samuel in the offseason.
