The Buffalo Bills, led by Josh Allen, are still chasing their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history. In recent years, they’ve come very close-in fact, last year they fell in a dramatic game against Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship
After a stellar season, Josh Allen signed a contract extension at the start of free agency with the Buffalo Bills for six years and $330 million, of which $250 million is guaranteed. This deal makes him the player with the most guaranteed money in NFL history.
Buffalo Bills fans booed and cursed after Josh Allen was drafted and the video still stings
The extension follows a spectacular 2024 season in which Allen was named MVP after throwing for 3,731 yards, 28 passing touchdowns, and 12 rushing touchdowns. With an average salary of $55 million per year, Allen is now one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. However, this has started to create serious issues.
The Bills’ receiving corps looks weak heading into 2025
Not long ago, the Bills’ receiving group included talented players like Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, and Deonte Harry – a roster that could easily compete in the NFL. But today, all three are gone from the franchise, and the Bills are now facing serious issues at the wide receiver position.
This year, they’ve brought in Curtis Palmer and Joshua Palmer, but that’s not enough. Many expected the Bills to draft a receiver in the first round – but that didn’t happen.
Perhaps Josh Allen’s massive contract has prevented the franchise from signing a big-name receiver for the 2025 season. Bills GM Brandon Beane appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and was asked why they didn’t take a receiver early in the Draft. He responded:
“Well, I mean, look at Tom Brady,” Beane said, referencing how Brady built a dynasty without a true WR1. “We were talking about some of these teams that won Super Bowls. Look at New England. How many historic, elite receivers did they have on their championship teams? But the Patriots were strong on the line. They had a good quarterback, usually a decent run game, like with Corey Dillon… There are hundreds of different ways to build a team.”
“When you’re paying Josh Allen what you’re paying him, you have to make sacrifices in other areas,” Beane continued.
Things could get rough for the Bills. Right now, they don’t have a WR1 and haven’t re-signed their running back James Cook either. With Allen, they’ll remain contenders – but the quarterback’s contract may slowly start closing the team’s championship window.
