The Kansas City Chiefs took a major step toward securing their future by selecting offensive lineman Josh Simmons with the final pick of the first round in the 2025 NFL Draft.
With Patrick Mahomes‘ blind side being a top priority, the Chiefs‘ front office, led by Brett Veach, saw Simmons as the perfect fit despite a setback during his final collegiate season at Ohio State.
Patrick Mahomes finds new protector as Josh Simmons joins Chiefs
Simmons‘ 2024 campaign was cut short by a patellar tendon injury, but expectations remain high.
Many analysts believe that if not for the injury, Simmons could have easily been a top-20 pick.
Now fully expected to be ready for training camp, Simmons arrives in Kansas City motivated to prove that he was worth the investment.
Rather than dwell on the challenges he has faced, Simmons is focused on the opportunity ahead-and he made a bold promise to the Chiefs faithful.
“The best four years that they’ve ever gotten out of anybody,” Simmons said, via Harold Kuntz of Fox4 News Kansas City.
“Obviously, I’m going to work my tail off. I know this tradition is extremely big on always winning. So, that’s all I am going to do. I’m going to just come in work my tail off, put my head down, and work.”
Chiefs banking on Simmons’ potential to anchor the offensive line
Soon after the pick was made, General Manager Brett Veach spoke with reporters, underlining why the Chiefs viewed Simmons as the perfect addition to their offensive line.
Veach expressed confidence that Simmons’ early-season tape before the injury demonstrated his potential to be a long-term answer at left tackle.
“I think everyone knows that when he’s healthy and with the tape he had early on last year before the injury, it puts him in the upper echelon of what he could be as a future starter and difference-maker at left tackle,” Veach said. “Had it not been for that injury, he’s probably not there.”
For a franchise with Super Bowl aspirations every year, keeping Mahomes upright is crucial.
With Donovan Smith entering free agency and the left tackle spot open, Simmons could step in as an immediate starter.
His mentality and determination fit perfectly with the championship culture the Chiefs have built under Andy Reid and Veach‘s leadership.
While it’s impossible to guarantee how Simmons’ transition to the NFL will unfold, everything about his attitude, background, and skillset points toward him becoming a key piece for Kansas City’s future success.
Chiefs fans can take comfort knowing that their new protector is arriving with his eyes wide open-and his work ethic fully engaged.
