Meghan Markle has come under fire once again for using her royal title despite a previous agreement with the late Queen Elizabeth II that she would relinquish it.
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, has reportedly referred to herself as “Her Royal Highness” in private conversations, which has raised concerns among critics who claim she’s not adhering to the terms of her deal with the royal family.

When Meghan and Prince Harry stepped down as senior royals in January 2020, they made an agreement with the Queen that they would no longer use their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles or the word “royal” after leaving their duties behind.
This agreement was a significant part of their decision to become financially independent from the monarchy and relocate to California.
Although no formal laws were enacted to ban the use of HRH, the deal made it clear that they would no longer publicly use these titles in connection with their new lives.
Criticism over recent use of “Her Royal Highness”
However, Meghan‘s recent actions have reignited controversy. A photo shared by her featured a note next to organic ice cream and jam, which some critics argue may have been a subtle promotion for her lifestyle brand, “As Ever,” as well as her new podcast episode with Jamie Kern Lima. This has raised the question of whether Meghan is still leveraging her former royal status for personal gain, despite the agreement to step away from using royal titles for commercial purposes.
Royal commentator Ingrid Seward weighed in.
“If her late grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth was still around, she would be highly offended, as she was very sensitive about that,” Ingrid added.
“The Queen didn’t remove HRH but told them not to use it… But she isn’t here anymore, so maybe Harry and Meghan think they can get away with it.”
As Meghan continues to carve out a life in California, her ongoing connection to her royal past remains a source of tension. Her use of HRH and her emotional displays on her podcast highlight the complex relationship she has with her former royal title and her current position outside the monarchy.
Despite her efforts to embrace her independence, Meghan‘s actions continue to stir controversy, leaving many to question whether she truly intends to break away from her royal ties or if she’s still finding ways to hold on to them for personal and professional gain.
