Actor Terrence Howard recently revealed that he turned down the role of Marvin Gaye in a biopic directed by Lee Daniels, because he was not comfortable playing a gay character
The confession took place during his appearance on the Club Random podcast with Bill Maher, where Howard was blunt about the reasons behind his decision.

During the conversation, Howard shared that his biggest professional regret was not playing Smokey Robinson, a role that Robinson himself had personally offered him. However, at the time, the actor was in talks with Daniels to play Marvin Gaye. The proposal cooled after a conversation with legendary music producer Quincy Jones, who allegedly confirmed rumors to him about the late singer’s sexual orientation.
“I asked Quincy directly if Marvin was gay, and he said yes,” Howard commented. Faced with this answer, the actor decided that he could not accept the role. “I couldn’t kiss a man. I wouldn’t fake it. If I did, I’d cut my lips off,” he said bluntly, generating mixed reactions from the public.
Terrence Howard needs to feel whole with his characters
Bill Maher, the show’s host, tried to relativize the comment, assuring that not kissing another man on screen does not automatically make him homophobic. Howard, for his part, emphasized that his decision was due to a lack of connection with that type of character: “I can’t give myself to something that I don’t fully understand. I couldn’t play it authentically.”
Although Marvin Gaye never publicly declared himself to be gay or bisexual, there are unconfirmed rumors about alleged relationships with men, including a comment by Quincy Jones in 2018 in which he linked him to actor Marlon Brando.
Howard, 56, closed the subject by assuring that he respects all identities, but that he needs to feel whole and honest with the characters he chooses to play.
