Vyražená střela se od nohy útočníka Minnesoty odrazila za čáru a gólman Adin Hill zoufale reklamoval kopnutí do kotouče. Sudí rychle překontrolovali situaci u videa a 75 sekund před koncem přiřkli vedení hráčům Wild.
„Myslel jsem, že to máme,“ povzdechl si Hartman. Jenže trenérský štáb Golden Knights byl precizní a reklamoval ofsajd. Útočník Gustav Nyquist vjel totiž do pásma o několik centimetrů rychleji než puk. Hartmanův gól tak byl odvolán a šlo se do prodloužení. „Chybělo jen pár cenťáků,“ zoufal si obránce Minnesoty Brock Faber.
Zápas přitom mohl mít dokonalou pointu i pro 40letého veterána Marca-André Fleuryho, který v brance Minnesoty zaskočil za nemocnou jedničku Filipa Gustavssona. V páté minutě prodloužení si však hostující bek Jon Merrill pozdě všiml před brankou volného Howdena. „Snažil jsem se proti němu vyjet a dělat ze sebe velkého, ale přišlo to hrozně rychle,“ řekl Fleury.
„Pro Flowera to samozřejmě nebyla snadná situace, ale je to skvělý brankář a odvedl skvělou práci,“ tvrdil trenér John Hynes, který Merrilla poslal do akce poprvé v play off na úkor devatenáctiletého mladíka Zeeva Buiuma.
„Ve třetí třetině jsme hráli skvěle. A pak přijde něco, co se stane padesátkrát za zápas. A teď se to stalo při gólu,“ odfrknul si smolař Hartman.
„Skvělá výzva,“ zářil naopak kapitán Vegas Mark Stone. „Jakmile jsme se dostali do šatny, cítili jsme se výborně, rychle jsme nabrali síly a měli jsme skvělý začátek prodloužení. “
A tak v noci na pátek půjde Minnesota do boje i navzdory statistikám. V historii play off NHL postoupil vítěz pátého zápasu po stavu 2:2 téměř v 80 % případů.
