CINCINNATI — Right-hander Chase Petty, one of the Cincinnati Reds’ top prospects, is scheduled to make his big-league debut Wednesday in the second game of the team’s doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals, according to multiple team sources.
Tuesday’s game between the Reds and Cardinals was rained out and rescheduled for a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday. Tuesday’s scheduled starter for the Reds, right-hander Brady Singer, will start the 12:40 p.m. game while Petty is scheduled to start Game 2, serving as the 27th man allotted by Major League Baseball.

Petty, 22, is 0-2 with a 3.52 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Louisville Bats this season. Ranked by The Athletic’s Keith Law as the team’s No. 9 prospect, Petty has 27 strikeouts and nine walks over 23 innings this season.
The Reds acquired Petty, a first-round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2021, in the 2022 trade that sent right-hander Sonny Gray to Minnesota. Gray, now a member of the Cardinals, will be at Great American Ball Park for Petty’s debut Wednesday.
Petty was known for his 100-mph fastball when the Twins took him out of a New Jersey high school in 2021. Petty can still throw in the high 90s, but is more of a sinker/slider pitcher now.
Winners of their last five games, the Reds had a day off last Thursday between their series in Miami and Denver. The team’s next day off isn’t until May 12, a stretch of 13 games. Using Petty in the doubleheader opposite the Cardinals’ Steven Matz allows the team to keep the rest of their rotation on schedule. Lefty Andrew Abbott was slated to start Wednesday, but will now likely start Thursday’s day game against the Cardinals, pushing Hunter Greene to Friday for the series opener against the Washington Nationals.
In addition to keeping the rotation in order, there is also a chance for more rain the next two days, which could further throw pitching plans for a loop.
Petty dominated in his last start with Louisville, allowing just one hit over six scoreless innings last Wednesday against the Iowa Cubs. Petty struck out seven and walked two in the Bats’ 1-0, 11-inning victory.
