Torpedo bats are making a lot of noise – but they’ve been quietly in MLB for a few years

Two days after the New York Yankees’ offensive outburst made torpedo bats the talk of baseball, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly de la Cruz decided to try one for the first time in batting practice. By the end of the Reds’ 14-3 rout of the Texas Rangers on Monday night, the 23-year-old slugger had used it to go 4-5 with two home runs, a double and seven RBIs.Advertisement“I just wanted to know if it felt good,” he said, “and it definitely does.”But while the bats have only recently become a major storyline across the league, it turns out that experiments with the uniquely shaped bats that caused a national uproar over the weekend in the Bronx have actually been happening quietly across baseball — and for a long time.“It became viral,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday. “But it’s nothing new […]

Reds’ Elly De La Cruz has career night, including 436-foot moonshot homer, in blowout win over Rangers

Getty Images With his Cincinnati Reds up 14-0 over the visiting Texas Rangers, shortstop Elly De La Cruz stepped to the plate a triple shy of the cycle. To be sure "a triple shy of the cycle," typically qualifies as overdramatic phrasing. Three-baggers are exceedingly hard to come by in the contemporary era, so they're quite often the missing component of the cycle. Usually, they remain missing. De La Cruz, though, is an uncommon combination of speed and power, so he's more likely to get that elusive triple than most hitters are.Speaking of which, let's roll tape of what he did to the 1-1 fastball from Gerson Garabito:  Rather than a triple, De La Cruz launched a 436-foot homer, his second of the night, that left the bat at more than 110 mph. No, that does not count as a cycle, […]

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, tired of losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, could make a game-changing move to finally win a Super Bowl

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills aren't running out of time, but it must be exhausting to constantly be a Super Bowl contender and fail to seal the deal... because the Kansas City Chiefs exist. However, this could change if they add more vital pieces to the team.Travis Kelce flirty move makes fans believe Taylor Swift was hidden during his latest podcastWith the NFL Draft just around the corner, and not before bringing in a Pro Bowler like Joey Bosa, the Bills could make unexpected moves to surround Josh Allen with talent. Why not consider a star wide receiver?According to Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com, the Bills should bet on a high-quality, star wide receiver to complement Josh Allen in the offense. "Two other names to monitor are New Orleans Saints receiver Chris Olave, who does come with a concerning concussion […]

Fantasy Baseball: Jurickson Profar’s 80-game PED suspension makes Lars Nootbaar a prime waiver wire target

Those who got on Jurickson Profar ride can get right back off now. The 32-year-old was suspended 80 games Monday for violating the league's PED policy. So I guess that explains it, huh? We wondered how the former top prospect broke through with career highs across the board last season after 11 years of mediocrity, and for all the talk of a new leg kick and workout sessions with Fernando Tatis Sr., a chemical assist would make for a tidier explanation. The timing is so suspicious that to suggest anything else would be pathetically naive, so while Profar's statement says he passed each of his eight PED tests last season, I don't imagine he's getting much benefit of the doubt right now.Truthfully, though, we don't know the timeline of events or what he took and why. We just know that he failed […]
