Erling Haaland ‘getting better’ but Manchester City ‘careful’ with Rodri return – Pep Guardiola

Erling Haaland is continuing to move closer to match fitness but Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola warned the club must exercise caution in a return for Rodri.

24-year-old Haaland has returned to training after suffering an ankle injury in the FA Cup victory over Bournemouth on March 30, while Rodri has not played since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in October against Arsenal.

“He’s getting better,” said Pep Guardiola of Haaland in Thursday’s pre-match conference ahead of the Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

When pressed if the Norwegian striker would be involved in that match, Guardiola replied: “I don’t think so.”

While Haaland and Rodri are now back in City training sessions, a return to match fitness is not yet a reality for the Spanish midfielder.

“The moment the official doctor says Rodri can start to play minutes, after that he will start to play minutes, but the doctors have to tell me,” Guardiola said.

“It was a difficult injury. It was an injury seven to 11 months, the doctor said. Every day Rodri is making more sessions but we have to wait so he doesn’t make a step backwards and get injured again so we have to be careful.

“Every training session he feels better and when the doctor says Rodri is stable and can start to play. After that, he is going to come back.”

Guardiola said he didn’t know if Ballon d’Or winner Rodri would play again this season, and that would be a decision for the doctor.

City have four Premier League matches remaining this term and the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace on May 17 before they participate in the revamped Club World Cup, held in the United States from June 14 to July 13.

England, Scotland FAs to ban transgender women from soccer after U.K. Supreme Court ruling

Getty Images England's Football Association will institute a ban on transgender women from competing in the sport at all levels, which will begin on June 1. The decision comes after the U.K. Supreme Court ruled last month that the legal definition of "woman" would not include transgender women. The controversial ruling will impact transgender women's access to things like restrooms, hospital wards, and sports clubs, among other things."As the governing body of the national sport, our role is to make football accessible to as many people as possible, operating within the law and international football policy defined by UEFA and FIFA," the FA wrote in a statement on Thursday. "Our current policy, which allows transgender women to participate in the women's game, was based on this principle and supported by expert legal advice. This is a complex subject, and our […]

Imagn Images Twenty horses will line up at Churchill Downs on Saturday for the 2025 Kentucky Derby, and the field consists of 19 colts and one gelding. The outlier is Burnham Square, who will become the 136th gelding to compete in the Run for the Roses. Mine That Bird (2009) was the last gelding to get draped in the lush blanket of roses following his victory, but the last nine geldings have finished 11th or worse. Burnham Square has higher expectations for the Kentucky Derby 2025 since he's looking to hit the board for the seventh time in seven starts. The Blue Grass Stakes victor is a 12-1 longshot, according to the 2025 Kentucky Derby odds. How will he stack up against the other 2025 Kentucky Derby horses like Journalism (3-1), Sovereignty (5-1) and Sandman (6-1)? Not only will we be ranking the 10 rookies who are most likely to have an instant impact, but we'll also be breaking down every team's best pick in the draft. As always, here's your daily reminder to tell all your friends to sign up […]
