Ante la posibilidad de que sea un equipo inglés el campeón de la Europa League se plantea una situación nunca antes dada: que un mismo país tuviese a seis equipos disputando una misma edición de la Champions League. Todo ello se debe al nuevo formato de la competición europea, en el que los equipos se pueden clasificar a través de tres vías distintas: las plazas Champions asignadas a su liga, la plaza extra que otorga el coeficiente UEFA a su liga y la consecución de la Europa League.

Por lo tanto, si la situación se mantiene tal y como está actualmente en la Premier y si no hay grandes sorpresas en la vuelta de semis de Europa League, seis equipos ingleses disputarían la Champions la temporada que viene. Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle y Manchester City se clasificarían directamente a través de las cuatro plazas garantizadas de Champions para la Premier League. El Chelsea, en quinta posición, sería el beneficiado por la plaza extra que otorga el ranking UEFA a la Premier. Y por último, o Tottenham o Manchester United lograrían la clasificación directa gracias a ser campeón de la Europa League.
