Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl, Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov were announced on Thursday as this year’s finalists for the Hart Trophy, given to the NHL’s most valuable player as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

Draisaitl ended the regular season with 52 goals and 106 points, securing his first-ever Maurice “Rocket” Richard award for most goals in a season. The next-highest goal-scorer on the Oilers was Zach Hyman, who had 27 goals in 73 games. Draisaitl’s 106 points were tied for third-best in the NHL with Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak. Draisaitl is seeking his second Hart Trophy win, following the COVID-19-shortened 2019-20 season, in which he scored 43 goals and 110 points.
Hellebuyck ended the regular season with a 47-12-3 record in 63 starts, the most wins by any goaltender this season. Hellebuyck also recorded the most shutouts (eight) and the lowest goals-against average (2.00), as well as the league’s second-best save percentage (.925), behind the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Anthony Stolarz (.926). Hellebuyck also is a Vezina Trophy finalist and is this year’s recipient of the William M. Jennings Trophy, for allowing the fewest goals among goalies who played at least 25 games.
Hellebuyck could become the fifth goalie in NHL history to twice win the Jennings and Vezina in the same season. He also would be the first goaltender to win the Hart Trophy since the Montreal Canadiens’ Carey Price in 2015.
Kucherov secured his third Art Ross Trophy after leading the league with 121 points in 78 games. It was his third consecutive 100-point season. Kucherov also tied for the league lead in assists (84), with Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon. Last season, Kucherov became the fifth player in NHL history to record 100 assists in a season — just days after teammate Connor McDavid became the fourth player to do it. Kucherov last won the Hart Trophy in 2019, when he totaled 41 goals and 128 points in 82 games.
