Nine-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky pulled out a vintage performance in the 400-meter freestyle at the Tyr Pro Series meet on Thursday, powering to a 3:56.81 finish to beat Canadian star Summer McIntosh.
It was Ledecky’s fastest time in the event since she swam a 3:56.46 to claim gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, a new U.S. Open record and the seventh-best time in history. McIntosh, who won three golds in Paris and took silver in the 400m behind Ariarne Titmus, finished 1.47 seconds behind Ledecky at the meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She held a 0.18 advantage coming off the final turn, but Ledecky turned on the jets to surge ahead in the final 50 meters.
“I don’t know if I ever thought I would be 3:56 again,” Ledecky said in a post-race interview. “All the credit to Summer. It’s always a great race when we’re next to each other. I’m just really happy with all the work that I’ve put in to get to this point.”

The blazing 400m followed a classic Ledecky display of dominance in the 1,500-meter freestyle on Wednesday. The 28-year-old notched the second-fastest time in that event with a 15:24.51 to touch the wall 39 seconds faster than her closest competitor.
Ledecky stands alone in the grueling distance event, owning the 22 fastest times in the women’s 1,500. Her top time of 15:20.48 came in 2018, while her most recent swim slots above a 15:25.48 she recorded in the event in 2015.

Though the Los Angeles Olympic Games are still three years away, Ledecky has said multiple times she’s eyeing a fifth straight appearance at the Olympics.
“I’ll take it year by year and give it everything I’ve got for as long as I have left in me,” she said when asked about continuing her career following her final race in Paris last summer.
