Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury.
Bergvall, 19, missed Spurs’ Europa League semi-final first leg victory against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday with an injury sustained in training the day before. The teenager’s absence was the first time he has not been involved in Spurs’ matchday squad this season.

Postecoglou described James Maddison, meanwhile, as “a concern” after he was replaced in the second half of the win over Bodo/Glimt with a knee injury. The midfielder is set to undergo a scan on the issue.
The Spurs head coach explained following Thursday’s win that Bergvall, who was pictured in a protective boot and on crutches, would be assessed to determine the extent of the injury, and confirmed during Friday’s pre-match press conference that he would not feature for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.
The midfielder, who signed a contract extension with the club until 2031 on Tuesday, has played 45 times for Spurs since joining from Swedish side Djurgarden last summer. He rejected a move to Barcelona upon agreeing to move to Spurs in February 2024 and officially joined the club in July.
“He had a big week, re-signing with the club and he’s had such a great year for us,” Postecoglou said on Thursday. “Like I said, it’s just the way our season’s gone, where in training something innocuous like that ends up with him hurting his ankle. We’ll just assess over the next few days, let it settle down and we’ll find the extent of it.”
Bergvall’s injury absence means he will miss Tottenham’s final four matches of the Premier League season, plus the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie against Bodo, and May’s final should they progress against the Norwegian side.
Spurs have contended with an extensive injury list this season, with first team players including Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min all having spells on the sideline over the course of the campaign.
