Gregg Popovich, o treinador com mais vitórias na história da NBA, deixou o banco do San Antonio Spurs depois de quase três décadas e cinco anos conquistados, anunciou este próximo fim da franquia. Há seis meses, o técnico americano de 76 anos sofreu um derrame cerebral que o obrigou a ceder o comando da equipe de treinamento interno ao seu assistente Mitch Johnson.
Popovich deixará seu papel de treinador para exercer como “presidente de operações de basquete” dos Spurs, sinalizando a organização em um comunicado.
“Ainda sigo sentindo amor e paixão pelo jogo, ele decidiu que havia chegado o momento de me retirar como treinador chefe”, disse Popovich no texto.
“Estou eternamente agradecido aos maravilhosos jogadores, treinadores, pessoais e aficionados que me permitiram servir como treinador chefe dos Spurs e estou emocionado pela oportunidade de seguir apoiando a organização, a comunidade e a cidade que são tão importantes para mim”.
Popovich, o técnico com mais partidas ganhas na NBA (1.422), dirigiu a franquia texana desde 1996. Sob seu comando, os Spurs alzaron os únicos cinco títulos de sua história em 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 e 2014, em uma dinastia inolvidável vencedora na cancha por estrelas como os americanos David Robinson, Tim Duncan e Kawhi Leonard, o argentino Emanuel Ginóbili e o francês Tony Parker.
Em julho de 2023, aos 74 anos, Popovich renovou seu contrato por mais cinco temporadas com a meta de culminar o atual processo de reconstrução da equipe ao redor do pivô francês Victor Wembanyama, considerado o jogador com melhor futuro da NBA.
No passado 2 de novembro, sem embargo, Popovich sofreu um derrame cerebral leve. Nos últimos meses seu retorno às pistas foi considerado improvável e no início de abril sofreu um incidente de saúde em um restaurante por aquele que deveria ser hospitalizado. Mitch Johnson, que completou uma década como assistente em San Antonio, passará a estrear de agora como treinador-chefe da equipe, segundo a ESPN.
