MLB roundup: Riley Greene (2 HRs in 9th) powers Tigers

Riley Greene homered twice during an eight-run ninth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 9-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night in Anaheim, Calif.

The Tigers hit four home runs in the ninth, three of which came off Angels closer Kenley Jansen, who entered with the game tied at 1-1. Greene led off the inning with a home run and Colt Keith went deep three pitches later. With two outs and a runner at first, Javier Baez added a blast off Jansen, who gave up six runs and six hits while recording two outs.

Greene’s second homer of the inning was a three-run shot off Jake Eder. Trey Sweeney also homered for Detroit, his coming in the seventh inning and forging a 1-1 tie. Tigers reliever Tyler Horton (2-2) got the win over Jansen (0-1). The Angels lost their seventh game in a row.

The Tigers’ offensive display in the ninth overshadowed the performance of the starting pitchers, Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and Los Angeles’ Jose Soriano. Skubal gave up one run — a leadoff homer to Zach Neto in the first — over six strong innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Soriano tossed six scoreless frames, with five strikeouts and one walk.

Yankees 1, Rays 0

Paul Goldschmidt hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, Max Fried allowed one hit in seven sparkling innings and New York earned a victory over visiting Tampa Bay.

Fried (6-0), Devin Williams and Luke Weaver (third save) threw a combined one-hitter in the opener of a three-game set. Fried became the majors’ first six-game winner this season while lowering his ERA to 1.01. Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 28 games.

Tampa Bay’s Jose Caballero hit a clean single with one out in the fifth off Fried. Ryan Pepiot (2-4) allowed two runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings in his shortest outing this season.

Mariners 13, Rangers 1

Cal Raleigh hit a solo home run and a grand slam while Bryan Woo and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as Seattle rolled in Arlington, Texas. The Mariners won their fifth in a row while the Rangers dropped their third straight game.

Woo (4-1) went 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight with no walks. Seattle pounded out 17 hits, including three from Rowdy Tellez.

The Rangers were kept off the board until Josh Smith’s solo home run with two outs in the ninth. Texas starter Jack Leiter (2-1) was tagged for six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Phillies 3, Diamondbacks 2

Kyle Schwarber and Max Kepler hit seventh-inning home runs as Philadelphia rallied past visiting Arizona.

The long balls off Jose Castillo (0-1) helped Philadelphia win for the fifth time in six games. Tanner Banks (1-0) worked a perfect seventh, and Jose Alvarado slammed the door in the ninth for his sixth save.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had three hits and an RBI for Arizona, which had won three of its previous four contests. Merrill Kelly received a no-decision despite allowing only one run and four hits over five innings, leaving early due to right hamstring cramping.

Dodgers 2, Braves 1

Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw six scoreless innings and Mookie Betts hit the decisive home run to lead visiting Los Angeles past Atlanta in the opener of the three-game series.

The Dodgers extended their winning streak to six after waiting through a 73-minute rain delay to start the ninth. Yamamoto (4-2) held the Braves hitless for 5 2/3 innings and surrendered just one hit. Yamamoto, who earlier Friday was named National League Pitcher of the Month, walked two, struck out six and lowered his majors-best ERA to 0.90.

The Braves finished with just two hits, including Matt Olson’s home run to center field. Losing pitcher Grant Holmes (2-2) threw six innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks. He fanned a career-high nine batters.

Giants 4, Rockies 0

Robbie Ray allowed just two singles in seven shutout innings, LaMonte Wade Jr. hit an RBI double in a three-run second inning and San Francisco blanked visiting Colorado.

Ray (4-0) walked two and struck out eight. Matt Chapman homered and Hayden Birdsong wrapped up San Francisco’s first shutout of the season with two innings of one-hit relief, allowing the Giants to snap a three-game losing streak.

Antonio Senzatela (1-5) yielded four runs on five hits in five innings as the Rockies’ season-best two-game winning streak ended.

Athletics 6, Marlins 1

Gunnar Hoglund gave up one run over six innings in his major league debut and JJ Bleday homered, doubled and scored three runs as the visiting A’s beat Miami to win their third straight game.

Hoglund allowed six hits, struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter. Seth Brown doubled and had two hits, an RBI and a run for the Athletics, who improved their road record to 12-6, tops in the majors.

Dane Myers homered and Eric Wagaman had three hits for the Marlins, who lost their sixth straight. Valente Bellozo (0-2) allowed five runs on four hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings.

Orioles 3, Royals 0

Dean Kremer threw seven shutout innings and Ryan O’Hearn broke up a scoreless tie with a two-run, seventh-inning home run as Baltimore beat visiting Kansas City in the opener of a three-game series.

Yennier Cano and Felix Bautista each pitched an inning of relief to complete the combined four-hitter. O’Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle had two hits apiece for the Orioles and Emmanuel Rivera added an RBI.

Michael Wacha matched Kremer through six innings before giving up three runs in the seventh. Michael Massey and Freddy Fermin posted two hits apiece for the Royals.

Red Sox 6, Twins 1

Rafael Devers hit a key two-run single in the seventh inning as Boston rallied for five late runs to beat visiting Minnesota in the opener of a three-game series.

Boston’s Alex Bregman (2-for-4) and Minnesota’s Ryan Jeffers hit solo homers in the early innings and the game remained 1-1 until Devers (3-for-5) knocked the go-ahead hit into right field. Justin Wilson (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Brayan Bello, who allowed one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Boston first baseman Triston Casas was stretchered off the field with an apparent serious leg injury after an awkward landing on the first base bag in the second inning. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said afterward that Cases sustained a “significant knee injury.”

Blue Jays 5, Guardians 3

Nathan Lukes hit a two-run, go-ahead single with two outs in the eighth inning and Toronto defeated visiting Cleveland for its third straight win.

George Springer hit a solo home run and Alejandro Kirk stroked a two-run single for the Blue Jays. Carlos Santana and Bo Naylor homered for the Guardians in the opener of the three-game series.

In the third inning, Cleveland star third baseman Jose Ramirez left the game due to a mild right ankle sprain after he lunged at the first base bag and fell on an infield single to the pitcher.

White Sox 7, Astros 3

Edgar Quero had two hits and two RBIs and Luis Robert Jr. homered to back six strong innings from Jonathan Cannon as host Chicago defeated Houston in the opener of a three-game set.

Houston rallied to within one run on Yainer Diaz’s solo homer against Jordan Leasure in the eighth, but Chicago added three insurance runs in the bottom half. Cam Booser pitched a scoreless ninth to help the White Sox win consecutive games for just the second time this season.

The Astros finished 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Diaz went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs and Jake Meyers added a pair of hits and an RBI. Framber Valdez (1-4) allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

Reds 6, Nationals 1

Hunter Greene struck out 12 in six innings and Tyler Stephenson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in his season debut as Cincinnati defeated visiting Washington.

Greene (4-2) limited Washington to one run on two hits and was within two strikeouts of matching his career high as Cincinnati won for the seventh time in its last nine. Stephenson was activated from the injured list earlier in the day after recovering from a left oblique strain.

Nationals starter Mitchell Parker (3-2) gave up five runs on four hits in four innings. Washington, which got a home run from Josh Bell, has lost five of its past seven.

Padres 9, Pirates 4

Luis Arraez had three run-scoring hits to lead San Diego to a win over host Pittsburgh in the opener of a three-game series.

The Padres beat the Pirates for the seventh consecutive time after sweeping all six matchups in 2024. Arraez and Gavin Sheets, who hit a home run and finished with three hits and two RBIs, each contributed in a three-run fifth that broke a 2-2 tie and put the Padres ahead for good.

Pittsburgh was led by Bryan Reynolds, who had two hits and an RBI, and Adam Frazier, whose solo home run cut the Padres’ lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Cubs 10, Brewers 0

Michael Busch hit a grand slam and Pete Crow-Armstrong launched two solo home runs, helping guide visiting Chicago to a victory over Milwaukee.

Ben Brown (3-2) allowed just four hits across six innings for Chicago, striking out four and walking none. Kyle Tucker, Carson Kelly, Nico Hoerner and Crow-Armstrong each tallied two hits. Chris Flexen threw three innings of one-hit ball to finish the shutout, picking up his first save since 2022 and the third of his career.

Tyler Alexander (1-3) served as the opener for the Brewers, surrendering two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning before being pulled for Quinn Priester, who allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Mets 9, Cardinals 3

Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo used the long ball to power visiting New York to a victory over St. Louis to snap a two-game losing streak.

In the opener of a three-game set, the Mets pounded out 17 hits, with 10 batters getting at least one. Nimmo went 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs, including a solo home run. Alonso hit a two-run homer as part of a 2-for-5 night. Clay Holmes (4-0) gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings.

New York chased St. Louis starter Sonny Gray (3-1) after just 4 1/3 innings, his shortest start of the season. He allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits. Masyn Winn went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Willson Contreras went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
