QB Jalen Milroe is cheerful but diligent in first minicamp with Seahawks

For all the million-dollar smiles Jalen Milroe flashed following his first practice with the Seahawks, it’s clear Seattle‘s third-round draft pick means business.

Milroe’s diligent approach stems from his being raised by military parents. His father, Quentin, served in the Marine Corps while his mother, Lola, served in the Navy. Both were on hand for the opening of the Seahawks’ rookie minicamp on Friday.

“Having two military parents, you definitely emphasize determination, grit, goals — short-term goals and long-term goals — and understanding that it takes a team,” Milroe said. “I don’t believe in the word self-made at all. It takes a team to accomplish what you want to accomplish. So, my team was here today at practice.”

So, too, was Milroe’s passing potential. He worked through the route tree and showed impressive touch on deep throws.

Milroe, who completed 64% of his passes at Alabama with 45 touchdowns and 20 interceptions, has spent the last year and a half working on his mechanics with former NFL quarterback Jordan Palmer in San Clemente, California. Palmer has also worked with Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and even Seattle’s new starter, Sam Darnold.

Milroe has gained a better understanding of the role his lower body plays in making strong, accurate throws.

“Every quarterback is different,” Milroe said. “And so, doing a really deep understanding of how my body functions at the quarterback position for how I throw the ball. And so, understanding how to distribute my body when it comes to my lower-half mechanics and things like that. That’s been a focus for us. And so with that, it’s all about being an efficient passer.”

Tight end Elijah Arroyo, a second-round pick, appreciated catching passes from Milroe.

“I can’t really explain it,” Arroyo said. “I’m not a quarterback, but just the way he throws the ball, the way he moves. He has a chance to be an elite quarterback at the highest level.”

Odds are Milroe will do a lot more sitting than competing early in his NFL career. Darnold, after all, signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract this offseason. The Seahawks also brought in veteran backup Drew Lock.

None of that is to suggest the 22-year-old Milroe intends on coasting in his first year as a pro. He said he began studying the Seahawks’ playbook the day after he was drafted.

“It was a quick turnaround for sure,” Milroe said. “It’s definitely now, this is my job. Now I know where I’m going to be. It’s a long process for sure.”

Milroe has some familiarity with having to learn a new offensive system. He worked alongside three offensive coordinators with the Crimson Tide. Last season, Milroe operated with an entirely new coaching staff, too, after Nick Saban called it quits on as decorated a coaching career as any in college football.

Seattle also has a new offensive coordinator this year. Klint Kubiak was hired in January after one season in the same position with the New Orleans Saints.

“We saw football in different lenses with each coordinator,” Milroe said. “You have different terminology. You have different formation adjustments.”

One familiar thing for Milroe on his first full workday as a pro: having his parents with him.

“My parents made a joke, ‘It’s like your first day of class today,’ and they took a bunch of pictures after practice,” Milroe said. “But no, it’s definitely cool to be an NFL quarterback, to get my feet wet, get acclimated with everything. It was definitely a dream come true for sure.”

Seahawks rookie camp Day 1: Jalen Milroe takeaways

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks’ rookie minicamp practice Friday afternoon was like the first day of school for third-round rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe and 70 other players, a mix of draftees, rookie free-agent signees, tryout participants and a couple of second-year pros. For Milroe, arguably the most compelling player of the Seahawks’ 11-man NFL Draft class because of the nature of his position, wearing that No. 6 Seahawks jersey and taking the field were a “dream come true.”Advertisement“It was a great feeling,” Milroe, the No. 92 pick, said after practice at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. “When I walked on the field, I really just acknowledged where I was at. Is Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch any closer to fixing the defence?

The Edmonton Oilers entered the postseason with more roster questions than any true Stanley Cup contender this spring. Injuries were rife across the roster, ineffective play from veterans was a real concern and the goaltending was a question mark. One by one, coach Kris Knoblauch found solutions from the available roster players.AdvertisementGoaltending was solved by inserting backup Calvin Pickard. Knoblauch did it during the Vancouver Canucks series one year ago, so the transition from Stuart Skinner to Pickard wasn’t shocking to anyone. What has been a surprise is the quality of Pickard’s performances. He currently owns the net, and Skinner’s return date is unknown (although likely if the team continues deep into the playoffs).Perhaps the biggest concern surrounded how to replace injured defenceman Mattias Ekholm. He’s slated to return to the roster at some point this spring, but the team needs […]

Dmitry Orlov ready to face off against familiar Capitals foe, this time as part of Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. — In the spring of 2018, Dmitry Orlov helped make happen what many thought impossible — bring a Stanley Cup to Washington, D.C.“Every year you’ve got the opportunity when you make the playoffs,” Orlov said. “I did it once, a long time ago, and you want it, for sure.”It certainly feels like a lifetime ago for the Carolina Hurricanes, who were left watching that postseason for the ninth straight offseason, seeing one of their division rivals lift the Cup a third consecutive time while the franchise spun its wheels.Advertisement“If you look back,” Orlov said, “we still have pictures, videos, celebrations, things like in restaurants with the Cup, the summertime. It was just so much fun, so much craziness. And you’re always going to remember who you played with on that team. How (much) they mean to you.”Sixteen days […]

Maple Leafs’ Matthew Knies is built for NHL playoffs — and he’s just scratching the surface

If you ask Matthew Knies about his breakout playoff series against the Boston Bruins last year, he’ll shake his head in frustration. He doesn’t want to talk about his massive overtime goal in Game 5 — his first playoff winner — to keep the series alive. Or how he jumped on the glass in elation. He’ll avoid chatting about how he was depended on by the team when it mattered at just 21. His ice time rose from around 10 minutes in Game 1 to around 19 minutes in Games 6 and 7.AdvertisementNo, Knies will only look back with something between resolve and longing when he discusses Game 1 against the Bruins. Early in the second period, with Boston already up 1-0, Knies tried to block a Brad Marchand shot. He got some, but not all, of his massive frame on […]

If you reduce Gregg Popovich to his TV sideline interviews, you missed a lot
