Sophie Cunningham didn’t waste any time making her presence felt in her first outing with the Indiana Fever. In a physical preseason opener against the Washington Mystics on Saturday, the veteran guard-forward made headlines not only for her scoring but also for taking plenty of contact in what turned into a gritty contest at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Cunningham was involved in two particularly rough exchanges. In the second quarter, she got tangled up with Mystics rookie Kiki Iriafen while chasing down a loose ball and was body-slammed to the floor in the process. Later in the game, she was again knocked down-this time by Brittany Sykes-prompting Fever veteran DeWanna Bonner to step in and defend her new teammate.
During the postgame press conference, Cunningham downplayed the impact but acknowledged the intensity she’s already feeling from opposing teams.
“I might need to try and hit the weight room… that was not good,” Cunningham said with a laugh. “But [DeWanna] had my back and that’s what it’s all about. We have a huge target on our backs, I don’t think that’s a secret.”
Cunningham embraces the physicality and leadership role in Clark’s absence
Cunningham’s reaction reflected not only humor but also a deeper understanding of what’s coming this season for the Fever, a team drawing national attention thanks to the addition of No. 1 overall pick Caitlin Clark. With Clark sidelined due to a minor leg injury, Cunningham assumed a leading role-and thrived in it.
The former Phoenix Mercury standout led Indiana with a game-high 21 points, helping the Fever secure a 79-74 overtime win against Washington.
She also praised Bonner’s support, recalling how the seasoned forward was once her mentor during their time in Phoenix.
“[DeWanna] had my back and that’s what it’s all about,” Cunningham said. “We have a huge target on our backs, I don’t think that’s a secret.” She added that Bonner’s defense of her didn’t surprise her in the slightest, referencing their history. “She was my vet in Phoenix. That’s just what she does.”
