Three-year-old colt Sovereignty, listed at 9-1 odds at post time, won the 151st Kentucky Derby in 2:02.3 on a rainy Saturday at Churchill Downs, thundering down a sloppy track that coated every horse and jockey in mud.
It was the first Derby victory for jockey Junior Alvarado and the second for trainer Bill Mott, whose horse Country House won in 2019.

Sovereignty started deep in the pack, as Bob Baffert’s Citizen Bull took an early lead and held it for the race’s first half. Then, in the final stretch, Sovereignty swung to the outside alongside Journalism, an early favorite to win.
The pair surged to the front, both pushing for the lead. But Sovereignty dug out a final charge to cross the line first, leading Journalism by 1.5 lengths.
Rounding out the top three was Baeza, who made the field Thursday after Baffert’s other horse, Rodriquez, was scratched from the race. Final Gambit and Owen Almighty took fourth and fifth, respectively.
The top-five finishers split the $5 million purse, with Sovereignty earning $3.1 million. Only 19 horses competed in Saturday’s race, following Rodriguez and Grande’s scratches.
A $2 bet on a Sovereignty win paid out at $17.96. A $.50 trifecta of Sovereignty, Journalism and Baeza paid $115.56, and a superfecta with Final Gambit paid out $1,682.27 on a $1 bet.

Balance has been restored: Scottie Scheffler is winning again. At the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, Scheffler didn’t just grab his first victory of 2025. He did it by playing what can only be described as video game golf, shooting 31-under par at TPC Craig Ranch for a wire-to-wire victory. His tournament total of 253 tied the PGA Tour record for lowest 72-hole score, shared by Justin Thomas and Ludvig Åberg.AdvertisementScheffler’s scoring average in Dallas this week was 63.25.You can’t overstate how difficult it is to win on the PGA Tour, but in this case, it was appropriate to start to wonder. When would Scheffler grab his first victory of the calendar year? His 2024 campaign set the bar impossibly high. That’s what happens when you win seven tournaments and an Olympic gold medal in 365 days. That’s what happens when you […]

Caitlin Clark draws loud welcome in return to Iowa for WNBA exhibition
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Caitlin Clark’s return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena featured the same sound as a jet engine at takeoff. Then it got even louder. The Iowa icon brought the Indiana Fever to her alma mater for a game against the Brazilian National Team, and the pregame introduction nearly blew her retired No. 22 jersey off the rafters at 116 decibels. When she knocked down the game’s first 3-pointer, it reached 117 and the roar didn’t fade nearly as much as the game’s competitiveness throughout the first half.
